The show ran from 1988 to 1997 and centered around the amusig and often heart-felt struggles the working-class, blue collar Conner family in Landford, Illinois. Taken from Barr's own upbringing, the show was hailed as a critical and ratings success for it's realistic portrayl of a segment of the US population which prime-time TV had all but ignored up until then. The show won many Emmy's (US Television Awards) for writing and acting during it's 9 year run.

Becky Conner was originally played by actress Lecy (Alicia) Gornason up until the 1993-94 season when Lecy decided to quit the show and go to Vassar College full time. To help explain her absence, they had her character and her boyfriend Mark Healy (Glenn Quinn) elope, and when they returned home, they moved out of the Connor household as the Healys--hence, Rebecca Healy-Conner.
