I was a plane captain in 212 from 1961 to 1963. We still had F4J-B's when I first checked in, but soon switched to A4's. It was known as VMA-212 at that time, and the squadron nickname was the "Devil Cats". Emblem was a tiger with a green snake in it's mouth. Squadron bar was Andy's Ebb Tide in Kailua. There was a plaque over the bar of the tiger with the snake and the tiger had flashing red eyes. Sister squadron was 214, Blacksheep, which also had A-4s. The fighter squadron was 232 with F8s. We we e all in MAG-13 at the time. VMA-212 had carrier quals on 6 carriers in that two year period. We had two CO's in that time, both Lt. Cols. Lt. Col. John Lowman, the 1st CO, and Lt. Col. Ed Lefavre, the 2nd. CO. Maintenance officer was Major Danny Char n. It was one hell of a squadron with the best officers and men in the Air Wing. None of us who were ever part of 212 will forget it. While stationed at MCAS Kaneohe I was attached to MABS-24 Launch & Recovery, with primary duties as crew member on the midfield M-21 arresting gear. It never failed to impress me having the Phantoms thunder by in full blower as they headed out to the rang s for training, or to have them hauled to a stop by the arresting gear at flight's conclusion. Both day and night the Morest crews witnessed the takeoff and landing evolutions, and was impressed that the Lancers almost NEVER seemed to have a mishap or eme gency recovery. I'm glad to see that VMFA-212 has been spared disestablishment, and wish "Good Hunting" to all in the years to come. Semper Fi! Edgar Faulkner

My response to Rich Leavitt's post: I was in Electric Shop under Gunny Webb from 10/73 thru 12/74. I only had a little over a year there because I was sent to K-bay with only that much time remaining. I was an E5 and worked with SSgt Jack Walden, Ron Reynolds, Dan Gallagher, Gilbert Benal y, and others that I can't remember. We deployed to Yuma in Sept 74 and a few of us went to Top Gun in San Diego immediately after the Yuma deployment. So many memories!

I was fortunate to be the XO/CO during that period. Had two 6 mo. WESTPAC and two 6 wk. mainland deployments, all with corresponding transpacs using Marine KC-130's.[The rendevous's out in the middle of the Pacific were always colorful!] I've been in a lo of great squadrons, but am convinced that NEVER, before or since, has so much aviation talent been in one squadron at one time as was present in 212 during those 3 years. There is so much history that should be written that is not here. I joined VMF-212 as a PFC out of boot camp, advanced to SSgt with the Squadron and was subsequently selected for 2ndLt and retired in 1969 as a Major. I credit the fine Officers and Men of the Squadron for my success such as Col Merchant, Don Ives, Doc Pegues, Tom Mulvihill, Dick Johnson Jim Bell the LSO and so many others. Keep up the site.

So far I've been in the navy 4yrs. My year with VMFA-212 has been the best. I will always look back on my time with the Lancers with pride and fond memories. LtCol "Skull" Guilfoyle not only commanded respect, but gave it in return. There was not a ma ine or sailor on that out fit that would not have gladly followed him to hell and back. The "espri de corps" that was demonstrated by all was what made the Lancers family, and drove home the feeling "once a Lancer, always a Lancer". Semper Lancer to all of you, past, present, and future. Doc "Oldlion" Keeler

Not so much a coment as a question. In 1982 I helped "at the time MSGT A.J. Wesson" who was Airframes Division Chief to paint a new logo on the F-4, it was a blue lance that protruded over to pedock tubes. It was the new logo until the time that I left i sept of 83. prior to this logo the old one was the sheild with crossed lances..... my question is when did they change to the new logo I see painted on the F-18? Anyone who can aswer me please feel free to e-mail me. By the way I was Hyd. shop.

Bay qualling any one and everyone that flew with us back at K-Bay.Including Generals. Doing a 12 turn 12 launch the day after returning from West Pac. Those were the best of times. I was on the Oriskany Cruise to Yankee Station off North Vietnam during most of 1965. I maintained the fire control radar "AN/APQ-94" bench on the hangar deck with Sassnet, Biggerstaff, McCormick, and Dodd. I remember pilots Ludden, Rutty, Sexton, Chaimso , Chapman, and Pyle. Harlan Chapman was shot down in Dec 1965 over North Vietam and spent over seven years as a POW until his return with the other POW's in early 1973 at Clark AFB. I loved this Squadron and had a lot of good friends during this difficult time. These pilots flew fearlessly and each had over 100 sorties to their credit. Hi, Sorry to be so informal, but it's been difficult to locate you guys. My name is Dan Cook (Corporal Cook) and I was an active member of the Lancer family from 1992 through 1996. I was just trying to get updated on the personnel and how everyone is doing. I know there may not be many people left from my period, but I thought I'd give it a try. Please let anyone who may remember know that I miss the Lancers and if there were a way I could be guaranteed to be reunited with you (and get my wife and my housing e tablished quickly), I'd love to re-enter the Corps. The Lancers were so much more than a squadron. They were, in fact, a family. Anyhow, I must go. Please let me know if there is anyone who recalls my presence and if there is anything I can do for any of ou. God Speed and Semper Lancers! Dan Cook

1948, I was attached to VMF 312, the Checkerboard Squadron (F-4Us with WR on the tail). As a Corporal I was plane captain for Captain Edward S. FRIS (Later LtGen). Although I served as a "Grunt" for most of my 31 years, I did serve as Staff Secretary to M jor Gen. C.J. Quilter and Major Gen. Adams. I had the honor of serving with Major Gen. Marion E. CARL while he was the Inspector General. Of course he was a legend of Marine Corps Aviation and considered an equal to Chesty Puller, a legend to we who serve as "Grunts". His tragic death was a shock to all Marines. Lest we forget! Semper Fi, LtCol Arthur Eppley, USMC(Ret)

Superb job with this Website. I have talked to Steve Albright and will be providing him with lots of photos etc. for his History of 212 for the Marine Corps Historical Foundation. Please correct the dates when I was CO 10/87-12/88. Dave McCarty, callsign JUVAT is the correct spelling for the first F/A-18 CO. Hope the tradition of full squadron pictures for the ready room is still in effect. Thanks for the memories and Semper Fi. Zodiac PS - The old MCAir still has lots of Phantom stuff in the store at the St Louis factory if anyone is interested.

I drove F-4B/Js for the Nav. Believe it or not, I lost the toss of a coin; he got the Marine Corps and I got the Navy. During my time, Vietnam, the Marine Corps had their shit together and stayed away from Boats. Three cruises impressed me more and mor that long runways at night are best. Now the Navy can't hack it and needs the Corps to "Augment" the Nav's presence on their own boats. For ages, only the Marine Corps has taken the lead in doing it right. Semper Fi!

The squadron received orders in early 72' to pack out and move to Da Nang, VN. The skipper, Col. Sfredo, said the orders stated we'd fly our first sortie in 48 hours....saying this while standing on the upper deck of the hanger at Kaneohe. We were in co ntry and winging along side our counterparts VMFA-115 ( I may be mistaken on the squadron number here), assisting in air support for the OV-10 spotters and ARMY forward observers in cessna's. It all happened so fast and very much like I say here, so much so that I hardly had landed in Da Nang that we were shelled, leaving small rocket frag holes thru-out our hanger just north of the revetments. I have pictures here of my troop buddies..we all stood perimeter tower watches around the hootches and the club house areas on mainside. I also have pictures of the holes from the small rocket frags in the hanger wall. (The walls were made of currogated metal!) There was a particular best friend I had made over there, his name was Kitt Ducey, hailed from the Chicago area, and he and I used to climb the mountains together, and play music back in Hawaii after we got back there. He played one mean harmonica!! I a so recall one Pat Ernst, a Sergeant, who owned an old 70' or 71' Triumph motorcycle, Bonneville model 650. I also owned an old bike over there, and helped organize the Wheels of Oahu M/C Club on the base...used to ride up in the firing range areas before it became a golf course..I think that's where it is anyway. Back to Da Nang; when I was there we also held many sandbag filling drills, shoring up all around our Flight Line shacks among the revetments, and erecting hip high firing walls around our hootches back in the quarters area. (Pictures of this too!) There was one specific incident when we were being shelled one evening from atop Monkey Mountain to the west, that this Gunny Reyes was up on the vertical stabilizer of a Phantom, changing an ALQ-100 antenna (it had been shot off...). The "incoming fire" claxon was a blaszin', and we - myself and the other line tech on the turtleback - had time to climb down the aircrew ladder and get underneath the aircraft for protection. The Gunny seemed to have panicked (sp) and jumped the 13 feet to the concrete dec , landing hard enough to break his leg. He laid there thru-out the bombardment, without being once hit by any fragging, but was later ceremoniously awarded the PH for bravery!!!!! A lot of us ended up resenting these so called personal awards and learn d to stay safe in all our further efforts during our stay in country. Even so far as to shoo out the mama-sans and baby-sans that lived underneath the perimeter towers around mainside every time we took the watch. I've recently begun to reminisce on these events, with some degree of warmth and appreciation for the comradarie, the sheer wonderment of the war around us at the time, and the level of confidence it has nurtured in me over the years. The old adage is so true....Once a Marine, Always a Marine!, and it applies also to the Lancers. SEMPER FI!!! I also have my coffee mug from the squadron, a huge white stein style mug, once replaced before you all left Kaneohe...my munchkins had dropped and broken the original one. With warm remembrances...I am yours truly, Former SSgt. Chuck Sparenberg

I know that the lancers served with great profficency in the Gulf war and all the many other Wars. And I know it helps when you are/were flying aircraft like the F4U Corsair, F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom and *F/A-18 Hornet*. I know the F/A-18 is very capabl and for all the Air Force pilots that take a look at this writing the F/A-18C could waste the F-16 anytime, anywhere.

212 is a great squadron, lots of good people to party with (especially in powerline). I hope ya'll have a good time on your 3 month deployement. I'm going to Norway in a few months with VMFA-134, But its only for two weeks. Thats all I'll do for the whole year. I had a hell of a time with 212 during that year. We worked our butts off, but we partied even harder.

Thanks for the site! It brought back some really great memories. I started my 2 years of duty with 212 twenty nine years ago this August and I regularly think about how important that time was to me. I'll never forget watching the sun come up (or as we used to say, the Marines from Camp Pendleton were pushing it up) over the Pali Mountain Range as we did our morning pre-flights. Ahh - the good old days!

Stationed aboard MCAS Iwakuni 70-17 with Navy VP-1, flying the P-3B. Iwakuni was _loaded_ with Navy and Marine Corps aviation: A-4, F-4, F-8, P-2, P-3, A-6, C-130, C-117, even C-45. Had to have a reservation just to get ramp space to park overnight. Staged into Cam Rahn Bay, RVN, every 3 or 4 days: 10 days in-country; 3-4 days back at Iwakuni, 10 days in-country, etc. for six months at a t me. VP-1 flew "Market Time": we went out fat, dumb, nervous, and unarmed in our P-3s looking for the bad guys' infiltrator trawlers sneaking down the coast from North Vietnam or China. Pentagon wouldn't let us carry weapons as this was judged to be "too provocative." So when we found a bad guy he'd shoot at us and we'd dodge and beat feet and call for fire support. Very strange war. Met a lot of Marine Corps fighter and attack types (212 guys?); really tore-up the O and E Clubs. Lots of memories.

Greetings to all Lancer's past & present. I served in '212 while it was under the command of (then) LtCol J.D. Howell. He's a LtGen now and I'm a retired MSgt. I still keep in touch with J.D. Loucks, another former '212 guy. He was my Assistant NCOIC while I was a Corporal in Radar Shop. There's another guy who used to be the NCOIC of Metal Shop, named Carey Depew. He was a SSgt at the time. He's a retired MSgt now working for Lockheed in Marietta, GA. Anybody who cares to, e-mail me or send a letter to 521 Vineleaf Dr. Louisville, KY 40222. Take care and Happy New Year! Tim Loftus

OOOoooRAHH!!! LANCERRRS!!! A lot of my former Aloha-Marine Buddies were "Lancers" of course we were all "Bay Qual'd" together (ask a old Hawaii Marine). Being an Red Devil made this hard, but we were all fond of each other why would we refer to each other as the "Girls Next-Door!". We also had some really shady (7yrs is up now) personnel/ACFT transfers that made 214 Black Sheep actions look like a Cub Scout Pack! Next FOD walk starting fm the Mals side look down on the concrete about midway across the line you will notice a hugh grey area. Back in 1982 Da Screw 232 painted a Hugh Red Screw on the flightline, so "BIG" that our Pilots could see it in their break ov r the field. The Grp CO(Grand-Pa Col. La Croy)ordered us fix it! "So we did!" We painted a hugh Grey Screw on top of it! I hope and Pray "All You Lancers" are well and your families are getting climatize in Iwakuni. We are All very Proud of your work over there! GOD BLESS ALL!!! Come Home Safely!! P.S. Tell Smilely send me a "double fry rice" to GO!

This is a great idea. Hopefully more former Lancers will stumble across this. Hawaii was great then and the unit rotations to Iwakuni tolerable. Thanks to the great group of Marines that were there at the time. Especially our C.O.. Has anyone else followe the career of LtCol J.D. Howell??? We always knew he was going places...
