Geology at the American University of Beirut

The American University of Beirut is the only university in Lebanon offering a specialist degree in Geology; in fact geology has been taught there for over a hundred years. The Geology Department also offers a Masters Program in Geology as well as a more broad based degree in Petroleum Studies.

The Department of Geology is based in the upper half of the historic Post Hall which dominates the south-eastern corner of AUB campus. The department is proud of being a small, informal and friendly department where the staff knows all the students from the moment they join the Department. Teaching of all the degree program is carried out in a small group setting in which students receive high quality teaching and are expected in return to deliver excellent results. The Chairman Dr. Abdul Fattah Abdul Rahman and the other staff members are developing strong emphasis on fieldwork to make use of some of the superb geological features to be seen in Lebanon. During the summer of their final year all Geology majors map individually 30 square kilometers of Lebanon in detail. Increasingly the Department is playing host to foreign geologists who come to study Lebanon’s rocks, structures and fossils. The involvement of the students with these experts allows them to broaden their experience and prepares them for an international career.

There is a lively Geology Students Society which has its own common room and which organises a variety of social activities.
