Chapter 1     PRIESTS

There are many stories made about the origIn  of names.   The farther back you go
the wilder they sound and the bigger the guess.  So as to not neglect any of the
wild tales about the Cann name, we will include them all as we were told.

I have often heard said that we were once Jewish, however I never have found it so
except in the case of Leopold Cann of California, who tells that he became a Cann
when his father, a Kahn or Cohen, emigrated to Wales from Russia and the
officer wrote down Cann.  Yes, he is still a Cann so he too is included in our history.
He suggested the following origin of the name, and I think it is true. I have no proof,
but if it is true, then we are also his blood relatives.

The High Priests, Princes, Spokesmen of the Almighty God, and Keepers of the Ark.

In the Temple in  Jerusalem at the time of Solomon there were priestly families
of Levi who were named Cohen.  They were ancestors of Aaron, the
brother of Moses, engaged in the care of the Ark of God and the spokesmen for
God.  These tasks havebeen passed down from generation to generation
sometimes ignored and forgotten by man but not by God.  At diverse
times and places God would renew his word and promise through various
ancestors in this line.  The Holy Bible gives us the long genealogies of God's
chosen priests. The scripture also says others not of blood ancestry are
grafted into the line simply because of faith.
Leopold Cann indicated thatline started with Adam Cann and Eve Cann in Eden
and later includes Jesus Cann the high priest.  However, not all the blood line were
God's children.  Remember that Cain Cann slew his brother, Able.  From the same
line came both good and evil. Cain was not a true child of God but was a child of
the evil one, whom he choose to follow. Likewise,  the choice is ours also. By not
choosing at all only means the evil one, Satan,  is your father. You can't get out of it
that easy. Only by faith, can anyone become right with God.  Faith is not the same
as religion contrary to what mostthink.  Becoming a child of God is not a function
of our bloodlines or religion. That is why Cain failed.  Able like all others was made
right by his faith in the shedding of Gods own blood for our sin.  Only by accepting
God's solution can men be saved.  Cain's religion was not good enough. Neither is
any man's religion good enough.
Religion is an invention of Satan. It is based on man's deeds.  His deeds are evil. Its
not by our blood, but by His blood.  It  is by believing in what God did by shedding
his own blood for us.

The true line of God does not follow mans deeds and laws, but follows  the acts of
God.  What appears outwardly to be the priests and people of God is not so.  It is
the inward and hidden things that make for the true priests of the Lord God.

Leopold Cann  says he is a blood relative of Yeshua Cann whom we call
by the greek name Jesus (Cann).  I don't know any better line than that.
Of course we all are related to Adam in the beginning.  Its nice to think
we are part of a special line however and with a special duty of kings and priests.

THE SEA

Ernest Cann of Wales says that the sea has been an important part of the
life of Canns.  English Canns worked and lived on the sea or near by it.

Also we know Jesus also had astrong feeling about the water also.
The Prophet John, baptized the believers in the river,  Jesus walked on
the sea.  Peter and John were fishermen. "The Canns are never far from the water,"
said Ernest.
Old English and Irish legends tell us of wide travels of Jesus and his
disciples.  Tales of them going to England and Ireland and building houses and
living there for two years. Many unexplained symbols, buildings and customs of the
area give credit to the possibility of the truth of these tales.  Likewise,
other stories of Jesus in America preaching to the Indians. There are certain early
symbols carved into stone.  In Japan and India similar stories are found.  Such
stories are wide spread in many ancient peoples. Jesus and his followers were quite
the seamen.  Whether this be tall tales or fact will be know someday.

Since the Cann line is not a line of Man's doing it can be difficult to follow.
At times it crops up in history, but not always as Gods line.

In 1206 The Genghis Khan (Cann) made his mark on Europe and Asia going through
in the name of his God slaying, robbing, raping, everything in sight. Khan
means "Lord" in Turk. He was born in Russia.  I don't think I will claim
him, even if there was a connection.  However the name and its meaning hold
true to Leopold Canns premise and should be mentioned.

In 1066 Norman may have enlisted Robert Caen to assist him in building of craft to
conquer England.   Robert was the Lord of the town Caen in Normandy
and was master of art of shipbuilding and fishing.  He was rewarded by
Norman with Lands in England.   The town of Caen was an old port dating back
before the Romans. The early saints would have used it on route to the Isles.

Many Robert's kin settled on the Thames to continue in the shipbuilding and
others settled in Bristol and the South Western parts of England.

In England some shortened the name to Can and then became Cann.
Certainly the spelling of the name varies with the language spoken. And
even in English the spelling varied from Kan, Can, Caen, Cann, to Canne all for
the same person.   Spelling has never been a Cann strong point.

Some have said that the "Mc" inMcCann was dropped and that's how they became
Cann. However,  I have found that the opposite took place.
That is, "Mc" was added to Cann.  It happened in Baltimore in the 1850s. The name
Mc Cann in Scotland should be checked to see how that originated.  Matilda Caen,
the daughter of Robert Caenmarried King of Scotland. Caenmoore and Caenvania
are old places in Scotland.   I understand that "Mc" means "son of".   So therefore it
follows that before there was  Mc Cann there was  Cann.  Still some history books
somewhere tell of "Mc"s dropping Mc when coming to America as Irish and Scottish
immigrants because it was unpopular to have a "Mc".   Maybe it happened but I
haven't located any Cannswho did this yet .

The earliest  CANN I found was John Cann of Cornwall England in 1542. Before that
was found CANNE and CAN in 1200s in England. Generally it is
said that surnames originate as place names such as Robert de Caen
from Caen, Normandy, Francein 1066.  Where did the town of Caen get its
name?  Surely from thepeople who first lived there.  And then where did they come
from?  Could they havearrived by boat from the mediterranean area or maybe Israel
as merchants and fisherman?  The town of Caen was a major colony and sea port of
the Roman Empire before itscollapse.  The jewish people have always been known
for their mercantile expertise and would have moved all over the Roman domain with
the help and blessing of Caesar.  Also it was the mode of expanding the early
Christian message. Whether or not, we are a result of this is a good subject for
debate. I know some will even be terribly offended by the suggestion.

In Bristol in early 1600s was found  Sir Robert Cann, a merchant and  son of Sir
William Cann, Son of Sir Thomas Cann.  He was Lord Mayor of Bristol and
owner of large shipping  company.  Sir Robert's brother was Rev John
Cann who was always in trouble for his preaching and not being a part of
the established church (religion).

Very few of the priestly deeds of Cann's are recorded in man's books, but God
knows them all and in the end God's book will open to tell the whole
story.

When the books are opened Ithink we will find that only a very very few of
the Canns were priestly,or truly children of God. Most will prove to be wicked
and ungodly. You know its true. It truly amazing that God could do
anything with us and find a few good ones among us. Sir Robert Cann was a
Pirate, money grabber, etc.  However, God used the likes of him and his
money to assist  godlyones in the family.

To America came Canns. Sentby rich fathers and uncles to reap a
harvest of gold and tobacco, but truly, they were sent by God to reap another
harvest.

By water came to America:

Before 1623 Tho Cann to Virginia.
Before 1623 Delphebus Cann to Jamestown.
Before 1628 William Cannto Salem Mass
1665 Cate and Jane Cann to Kent County Maryland
1675 John Cann, son of Sir Robert Cann, to Newcastle, Delaware

Cann means A VALLEY

Cann means valley in several languages,  in Anglo Saxon.
In welsh means land between two hills.
In British Columbia Canada is a Cann Valley.
