Carroll: "Alexander, the youngest surviving child of Robert and Jean (MeFarlane) Camphell, was born at Strone Mallon Farm, Loch Long Side, near the town of Roseneath, in the Parish of the same name, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, 12 Oct 1814. In 1832, when Alex was 18, he and his 24 year old brother Humphrey, emigrated to Upper Canada. 1832 is remembered by historians as "The year of the Cholera", when many newcomers died, it was also one of the busiest years for emigrants, 1832 saw 92,000 come from the United Kingdom to Upper Canada. The first year they spent around Hamilton, finding work in the construction of wharves on the newly built Welland Canal. The next year they came up the lake to Port Stanley, ON. Humphrey bought his farm in Ekfrid, 10 Feb 1834. It is not known when Alex purchased his, lor 22 concession 2, Dunwich where he settled in 1837, about a half mile south of the river. The closer a farm was to the river the more valuable it was because of easy access and transportation on this highway through the forest. "Alex's first dwelling was a small log house on the side of a small ravine that ran through his lot, this was to be sure of water. In later ears the family wash was often done by the side of this small creek and dried on the branches of a fallen tree. "Being an "Old School Baptist", Alex used to walk ten miles to attend lurch on Talbot Street, west of Wallacetown, here he met his bride Janet Carswell, daughter of Archibald and Isabella (Gillies) who lived near the church, although born in Aldborough Twp. On 7 June 1849, 35 year old Alex married 28 year old Janet, after the ceremony at the Carswell farm home the newlyweds walked the ten miles to Alex's farm on the second concession, Janet spraining her ankle on the way. "The nearest store was at Iona, on the Talbot Road, a distance of nine miles, the butter and eggs had to be carried to the store where they were exchanged for household supplies. Later, Margaret, the eldest daughter, carried produce to a store in the new town of Middlemiss, and remembered being frightened as she passed the infamous "Dead Fall Inn", the local tavern, at the top of the river hill in Dunwich, on the Iona Road, as the half drunken men, Indians and Whites, would be lying around on the ground outside. Dougald and his bachelor brother John C. farmed their father Alexander's homestead farm on the 2nd conc. of Dunwich Twp. as well as other land. Christena was a daughter of James and Rehecca (Plain) Cobban of Southwold and a sister of James no-346-a, she died at age 28, shortly after the birth of her 3rd child, James. Two years later Dougald married Margaret Eaton, aged 41. They lived on the 2nd until 1915 when they moved to a fine new red brick veneer,slate roofed house Dougald had built on the farm at the corner of the Willey Sideroad and the 4th conc. Here they lived out their days. The old frame home on the 2nd remained empty until Philip got married in 1929, the old house was moved to the 3rd conc. and renovated and improved into a lovely home, about 1960 it was destroyed by fire. The other buildings on the 2nd, the large barn, the outbuildings, the shade trees and the old orchard are now just a memory, the only thing now on the site of Alexander's old homestead is an oil well, its huge pump run by electricity.
