Medical-Dental Mission

More than a hundred parishioners – adults and children – received the benefits of a free medical-dental mission conducted in Our Lady of La Paz Parish last June 11 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the church plaza. Volunteer dentists administered tooth extraction while the medical doctors made themselves available for free consultation. Patients diagnosed with common ailments were given free medicine. X-ray services were also made available with the use of mobile X-ray equipment. Some of the children who underwent the X-ray procedure will be eventually included in the new feeding program that the parish will launch in the near future.

It was through the generosity of a parishioner two of whose children are a doctor and a dentist that the medical-dental mission took place. The doctor and the dentist invited their friends who are also healthcare practitioners and together they formed the team that provided the La Paz parishioners with badly needed medical and dental treatment.

Public Speaking Class 101

A public speaking class was held here in our parish during the last weeks of summer and towards the start of June 2007. This program aimed to train the young people of La Paz to communicate confidently in front of many people. The energetic volunteer- mentor, Mrs. Aida Valles, trained the participants and brought out the best in each of them. For seven sessions lasting two hours each, the students learned a lot about the proper and correct way of speaking in public. With the untiring assistance of Sis. Imelda Andia, another parish volunteer, the pupils were able to learn while enjoying their merienda coming from good – hearted people. Thirteen participants from the children’s choir, altar servers, and some youth parishioners benefited from the said summer program.

Graduation day was held on June 11. This was a very extraordinary day for the participants. Fr. Robert Chua, OSC, our very supportive parish priest, attended the event during which he gave an inspirational speech. Sis. Cleofe Ranollo, parents, and some guests also attended the simple but meaningful ceremony. The highlight of the event was the speech contest wherein the participants directly applied what they have learned and practiced through their effective speeches. The three categories were Story Telling, Impromptu Speaking, and Prepared Speech. Four contestants joined the Story Telling contest, while all the students joined the Impromptu Speaking and the Prepared Speech competition.

Anne Bernadette Estipona, a fine-looking teener, was the winner in both Story Telling and Impromptu Speech categories. Vince Henry M. Salles (that’s me) got the medal for Prepared Speech category. A surprise award was also given by the mentor herself. He chose Vince Henry (yes, that’s me again) as the Most Improved Speaker among the participants.

All the participants thanked Ms. Valles and Fr. Chua for the support they had shown to the youth groups in this parish. They are looking forward to another learning experience next summer.

The Public Speaking Class participants were Meryll Calejesan, Efren Estonanto, Shiela Marie Estonanto, Andre Estipona, Frances Estipona, Anne Bernadette Estipona, Danica Rose Gustilo, Jhanine Villarino, Stephen Ilagan, Emmanuel Magallanes, Ma. Sarah Magallanes, John Patrick M. Salles, and Vince Henry M. Salles.
