Why the Bible is true

There are many who wonder why the Bible is true or some if it is true want proof.  The best way to defend a weapon is to use it.  A soldier in battle doesn’t try to reason with the enemy that his M-16 shoots bullets.  The soldier uses the M-16 to prove its power.  The Bible is sharper than any two edged sword (Hebrews 4:12,13), so we must use it to prove its power and truth.

We can not base our beliefs on science, because science changes.  All the scientists used to think the world was flat and laughed at the Bible for saying the world was round.  The scientists were proven wrong, the earth is round. Proverbs 8:27, Isaiah 40:22 The Bible mentioned the currents in the sea Psalms 8:8.  The scientists used to laugh at the notion of currents or paths of the sea, we now know them to be real.  Once again, the Bible proved to be true.  Science is based on theory not truth.  The laws that Isaac Newton discovered were shaken by Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity.  For example, matter can not be created or destroyed was proven incorrect.  In a nuclear reaction matter can be created or destroyed.  The law became a theory.  Since, science is subjective no matter how much it claims otherwise we must base our belief on the Bible, because it is the truth and truth never changes.  Science is only good as the scientists and they are human able to change and make mistakes.  God does not change nor can He ever make a mistake.  Any time man has said that God was wrong, it man who has been proven wrong every single time.

The first proof that the Bible is the Word of God and thus true is that the Bible is inspired by God.  II Timothy 3:16.  The Bible is Divinely Inspired by God and is without error.  “Thy Word oh Lord is Truth.”  The Bible is completely 100% truth and there is no error within it.  II Peter 1:21 The Holy Spirit is the One Who told the men who wrote down the words of the Bible what they must write.  The Bible is complete and is never to be added to, taken away from, or changed.  Revelations 22:18 & 19.   ‘God said it, I believe it, and that settles it.’

The following is from Josh McDowell’s “A Ready Defense”, the writings of the late Dr. Jerry Moore, Dr. Bruce Metzger and Pastor David Moore.

Ø      The Bible was written by over 40 different people who were told by God what to write.

Ø      The Bible was written over a 1500 year span.

Ø      The Bible was written over 40 generations

Ø      The Bible was written in different places:  for example Moses in the wilderness, Paul in prison, John on the isle of Patmos, etc.

Ø      The Bible was written on 3 different continents: Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Ø      The Bible was written in 3 different languages:  Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Ø      The Bible has continuity in its message:  The entire Bible points to Jesus Christ and His redemptive plan for mankind.[1]

Ø      The New Testament has been preserved on over 4,000 Greek manuscripts and over 13,000 copies of portions of the Greek New Testament

Ø      The Dead Sea Scrolls confirmed that the massoretic text was accurate.  The Dead Sea Scrolls are from (150 B.C. to 70 A.D.)    They confirm the Hebrew Old Testament to be accurate.

Ø      The Septuagint is from 200 B.C. and is a Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament.  It also is a confirmation of the accuracy of the scribes who copied the Bible in their day and the authenticity of the Old Testament text.

The Bible has been passed down from generation to generation without losing its meaning or changing.  The original texts are 100% true and without error.  Any errors, additions, or omissions have come in more recent times with translations from the original languages for example the Textus Receptus, Latin Vulgate, etc. The Textus Receptus was translated by Erasmus in 1516.  Erasmus was semi-pelagian in his translation from the original texts.  Martin Luther concluded Erasmus was not a Christian.  The Textus Receptus is the foundation for the KJV.  The Latin Vulgate was translated by Jerome from 382 to 405 from the original languages into Latin.  Jerome was against the heresies of the pelagians, as was Augustine.  The Textus Receptus was based on the original languages and the Latin Vulgate of the Catholic church.  The two oldest texts are the most accurate and the NASB is based on those two texts.    It is important to remember the Bible is inspired and infallible in their original languages and texts.

The Bible has many prophecies.  The Bible told in Isaiah of the birth of Jesus Christ.  Isaiah 7:14.  Per the Ryrie Study Bible, the book of Isaiah was written aprox. 740-680 B.C.  Jesus was born aprox 4B.C. to 0 A.D.  In other words, Isaiah was written about 700 years prior to the Lord’s birth, yet Isaiah prophesied His birth.  Matthew 1:23.  Isaiah 9:6 and Luke 2:11.  The prophecy of the birth of Jesus Christ by a virgin is just one of many prophecies that have come to pass.

The Bible has told about many cities, towns, buildings, etc.  Archeology has proven the Bible to be accurate.  I met a military chaplain who was on leave from serving in Iraq.  While there he toured the ruins of the tower of Babel.  For over a thousand years people said that the tower of Babel was a myth, yet now we have uncovered it.  By the way, the book of Daniel was written in what is modern day Iraq.  Daniel was in the city of Babylon.

This is just an overview as to why the Bible it true in the coming weeks we will do a more in-depth study into each area.  The best reason the Bible is true is because God said it!  God cannot lie.
