Doctrine of Salvation
Lesson 4

Purpose of  lesson: To show that Christ died for all, yet his Blood is only sufficient for those who believe. Ephesians 2:8.9.  Salvation is the gift of God.

John 3:14-17,  Romans 3:23, 24  True faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ with repentance from sin is what saves.  Jesus died for all the world.  2 Corinthians 5:14, 15, I Timothy 2: 5, 6, I John 2:2.  Jesus paid the penalty for all sins.  There are several different groups that take this to mean several different things.

 1.     There are those who teach Universal Redemption.  Since Jesus died for all, that everyone is saved.  This doctrine is obviously wrong.  Because we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.  If  Universal Redemption was true, then the rich man would not have been in hell in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.  Luke 16: 23

 2.     There are those who teach Limited Atonement.  That Jesus only died for those who would be redeemed and not for the sins of the whole world.  The verses we just looked up show that Jesus did die for the sins of the whole world.

 3.     Then there are those who teach Particular Redemption.   This differs from the previous two in that  Jesus Blood is sufficient for all, but only efficient for those who believe on Him.  Both the Limited  Atonement and Particular Redemption groups believe that Jesus death secured salvation for Christians.  There is another group that teaches the Blood of Christ doesn’t secure salvation for anyone.  I Timothy 1:15 Blows the theory that Christ’s Blood doesn’t secure salvation out of the
water.  Galations 1:3,4 Back this up  -- remember the Definition of Salvation is to be delivered from sin and its penalty.  I Peter 3:18, Romans 5:8,9 , Hebrews 9:12  The purpose of Jesus death on the  cross was to secure salvation from sin, so that He could bring us to God.  Other verses that back this up are Titus 2:14, Hebrews 13:12, Galations 3:13, I Peter 2:24.

The Blood of Christ is only effective for those who believe.  Acts 16: 30, 31, Ephesians 2:8,9  Faith is a necessary component of Salvation.   Albert Barnes says of the Acts passage, “the direct meaning of this is, that salvation, was offered to his family as well as himself; implying that if they believed, they should also be saved.”    Believing on the Lord Jesus, turning from sin and accepting His offer of Salvation through faith is what make His blood effective.  Without faith it is impossible to please God.  Hebrews 11:6
