Colossians Series

Introduction

Written by: Paul

Approximate Date of Writing: 61 or 62 A.D.

Where written:  In a Roman prison.

Written to: The church at Colosse.

Theme: The supremacy and complete sufficiency of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Background: Colosse was located about 100 miles east of Ephesus.  Hierapolis and Laodicea were near by.  Laodicea was about 11 miles west of Colosse.  Hierapolis was about 13 miles North West of Colosse.  Paul was in prison in Rome during his first imprisonment there.  Notice he didn’t let persecution keep him from serving God.  While in prison he wrote this book, Ephesians, Philippians, and Philemon.  From Rome during his second imprisonment he wrote 2nd Timothy.  Later he was beheaded in Rome for the cause of Christ.  Living for God cost Paul something.  He lived and died for what he believed in and that is our Lord Jesus Christ.

The church at Colosse was not started by Paul, but one of his converts.  Many think it was Epaphras that started the church there, but the Bible doesn’t specifically state that.   Philemon was a resident of Colosse and was a convert of Paul’s most likely at Ephesus, where Paul pastored for 3 years on his third missionary trip.

Purpose of Epistle: to set straight the true doctrine of Christ.  Colossians reproves the false teaching of the Judaisers which are similar to our modern day legalists.
