Verse 8.  “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”  II Peter
1:10.  We need to be sure we are truly saved and not one of the people who claim to be in the
light yet they walk in darkness.  In verse 6 we dealt with those who claim to walk in the light yet
they are really in darkness.  II Corinthians 13:5, Titus 1:16 of this verse Stephen Charnock states
in his discourse On the Existence of God, “the apostle does not say that they know God, but they
profess to know Him: true knowledge and profession of knowledge are distinct.”

Romans 6:14  Once we are saved we are no longer under the power of sin.  Salvation is defined
as to be delivered from.  At salvation we are delivered from the bondage of sin.  We are no longer
under its power.  Before salvation we are controlled by sin.  After salvation we are to be
controlled by God.  A planet orbits around a star.  Our earth, for example, orbits around the sun.
The earth is controlled by the sun’s gravitational pull.  The gravitational pull is what keeps the
earth in orbit.  The earth is moving around the sun under the power of the sun.  What our lives
orbit around controls us.  If we orbit around God then, He controls us.  But, if we fail to have
God as the center of our orbit, then we are under the control of sin.  Jesus blood sets us free from
sin.  So once we are free why should we ever return?

Heart knowledge and head knowledge are two distinct and separate things.  From the heart man
believeth unto righteousness, but mere mental assent never saves anyone.  The devils believe and
tremble, but it does not save them.  Heart belief is needed for true salvation.  Mere profession will
not get you to heaven.  Profession and conversion are two distinct things.  I can profess to you
that a garage is really a bed room, but it is still a garage.  Not until the garage is converted into a
bed room, does it become a real bead room.  The same is true of salvation.  Mere profession of
salvation means nothing without heart conversion.  Titus 1:16  False professions.  John Calvin
states, “they who glory in falsehood are deceived”  They refuse to admit to sin.

I John 1:8,10  Admission to sin is needed for any forgiveness.  We must admit that the sin exists
otherwise we will not seek forgiveness.  We can deceive ourselves and maybe some other people,
but no one can deceive God.  He knows the truth. Genesis 16:13b says, “Thou God seest me”
Jeremiah 17:10,   God knows the inward parts of the heart.  You cannot fool God.  Psalm 51:6
We need to be truthful with ourselves in the inward man.  God knows the truth.  We need to
admit the truth.  When we sin we must admit that we have sinned.

If we say that we have no sin, then the truth is not in us.  Failure to call sin “sin” is a sign that
conversion has not taken place.   By not  admitting to sin, we are calling God a liar.  If God says
that something is a sin and we say no it’s not.  Then we are calling God a liar and His word is not in us.  Part of being truly saved is recognizing that we are sinners and that we are dependent on God for forgiveness.

I John 1:9  We must confess our sins, admit that they do exist.  We need to repent of them turn from them and ask God for forgiveness.  A side-note in my commentary by a former owner of it states, “confession demands repentance in such a way that it does not provide license.”  Verse 9 is not a license to sin.  God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
