I interviewed Janet Mirek Krom for the interview portion of this project. Janet was born on October 19, 1951 in Ridgewood, New Jersey to Aloytius Frank Mirek and Wilma Eleanor Taylor. When Janet was fifteen years old, she and her family moved to Puerto Rico because her dad was setting up a textile factory for the company he worked for. She lived in Puerto Rico for two years before her and her family moved back to the United States. During her childhood and into her late teens, Janet lived in around five different states along the East coast, ranging from North Carolina to Vermont.
Janet decided to get into the field of nursing because her mother had been a nurse also. Her mom attended Mercy School of Nursing in Buffalo, New York. Since Janet wanted to do the same, she attended Mercy School of Nursing in Charlotte, North Carolina. While in North Carolina, she met a dashing young air force serviceman named Robert Krom, whom she later married.
When Robert Krom moved out here for work once he retired from the air force, Janet came and found work at the MCAGCC, or the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, in
29 Palms, California in 1993. She began work for the NPSP, or New Parent Support Program. This service deals with helping young couples in their parenting lives. The program is mandated through the Department of Defense so that young marines, while away in the Middle East or other areas, can know that their family is being supported. The service is also designed to make sure that active duty personnel are combat ready and are prepared to do their part in the marine mission knowing that their family has local support.
Janet works around United States Marines every day. She interacts with different personnel with different ranks in the hierarchy of the United States Marine Corps. She has talked to hundreds, perhaps thousands of enlisted servicemen and women on the base in 29 Palms. She has been working around these servicemen for 12 years now and could tell pretty much anything someone would want to know about the Marine Corps. She has been invited to, and attended Marine Corps balls, conferences, etc.
Janet still works at the NPSP station on the 29 Palms Marine Base with her super hot husband, Robert Krom.
