Trumpet Bird

Trumpet Bird (Manucodia keraudrenii)

The 5 species of manucode breed as stable pairs instead of mating polygamously in the family tradition. Accordingly, male and female birds are very similar, with uniform metallic blue-black plumage. They share the duties of incubating the eggs and feeding the young, but unusually, they do not defend their nesting territories.

They are primarily fruit-eaters and the Trumpet Manucode, or Tumpet Bird, feeds mainly on figs. The bird is named for the loud, mournful, trumpeting call produced by the male during his courtship display, after he has chased his prospective mate through the trees.
