Raggiana Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea raggiana)

Instead of displaying alone, male Raggiana Birds of Paradise assemble in groups at traditional treetop arenas, or leks. In practice 1 or 2 dominant males  obtain nearly all the matings in any season and the other males on the lek display in vain.

When females appear at the lek, the males converge on them, calling excitedly and displaying by hopping, flapping their wings noisily and shaking their plumes. This initial frenzy is followed by a quieter but equally breathtaking display, in which each bird attempts to outdo his rivals in showing off his gaudy finery. At the height of their display, the males utter a rapid series of high-pitched nasal calls, rising and falling in pitch and intensity; during the quieter part, they give a single ringing note. Other calls include a series of loud, raucous, bugling cries, all on one pitch, increasing in volume and slowing in tempo towards the end.
