A NORMAL WEEK IN FOUR CORNERS (Part II)
Suddenly they heard a breaking of glass and several gunshots.
hj hj
"Where the hell are they?" Ezra yelled not managing to pinpoint the shooters'
locations.
"Up on the roof." Vin said as he aimed his rifle and took one of the shooters
out.
hj hj
Chris took out another shooter who resided in the saloon. While Buck shot
another man who was peeking out from a window on the second floor of the
saloon. Josiah shot a man that he saw on the roof of the saloon and Nathan
killed a man with his knife.
hj hj
"I'm coming out!"
hj hj
Chris looked over towards where the voice came from with his gun trained on
the movement. Suddenly it felt like a cold hand grabbed hold of Chris' heart.
A man in beard and moustache, all dressed in brown, stepped out of The
Clarion's office with Mary infront of him. She had been beaten up pretty bad
and Chris felt the anger rise up in his body.
hj hj
"Throw out your guns!" the man yelled.
hj hj
Chris stood up and Mary gasped as she saw him throwing his gun to the ground.
Soon Josiah and Nathan came out and threw their guns. Buck soon did the same.
hj hj
"There's one more of ya!" the man said.
"I believe that would be me." Ezra said as he rose up and threw his gun.
"Ya'll are very smart. Now, maybe the beautiful lady will survive." the man
said not knowing that Vin was still hiding.
"Let her go." Chris growled in a cold voice.
"I don't think I can do that." the man said.
"Let her go." Chris repeated.
"I can't, then you'll kill me." the man said.
hj hj
Chris saw in the corner of his eye that Vin aimed at the man. Chris knew that
he had to keep the man busy and still so Vin could hit him.
hj hj
"Let her go." Chris repeated again with an angry voice.
"Why would I do that? You'll kill me if I do." the man said again.
"You're dead either way." Chris said as Vin pulled the trigger.
The bullet hit the man in the shoulder and he let Mary go. She tried to run
but fell down since she tripped on her skirt. Ezra flicked his wrist and the
small derringer came out and he fired two shots directly to the man's chest.
The man fell to the ground clutching his chest.
hj hj
"JD... Oh no!" Buck whispered as he went up to check on him.
"Buck..." a barely audible whisper was heard.
"JD." Buck said and a single tear fell down the tall man's cheek.
"I'm okay, Buck." JD said as he saw the man crying.
"You don't look okay, kid." Buck said as he sat down on the bed.
"How are the others?" JD asked as Buck took off his bandanna and gently wiped
some blood from JD's lip.
"They're alright." Buck said.
"I was so scared." the young man whispered after a while.
"That's okay, JD." Buck said as he watched JD start to cry.
"But I'm not..." JD said as he tried to wipe his tears away.
"Hell, kid, I was scared to death when I found you here." Buck said and gently
hugged the crying JD.
"Are you alright, JD?" Chris said as he opened the door with Mary in his arms.
"Yeah, I'm okay... Mrs Travis!" JD exclaimed.
"Can you move from the bed?" Chris asked.
"Yeah, with a little help." JD said and grabbed Buck and he helped him get up.
hj hj
Chris gently placed Mary in the bed and Nathan came in and examined her
bruised face. Buck lifted JD in his arms and carried him over to his own bed
in the opposite house. JD objected and said that he could walk himself but
Buck didn't seem to hear him.
hj hj
"It's okay, Mary. Everything's alright." Chris soothed her.
"She'll be just fine." Nathan said. "Except for a split lip and some bruises
she's just fine."
"Thank you." Chris said as Nathan quietly left the room.
"Mary... Mary, look at me." Chris pleaded and Mary looked up at him. "Are you
okay?"
"I don't know." Mary whispered. "I was so scared, Chris."
"I know, I know." Chris said and hugged her again.

A couple of days later everything had went back normal. JD was up again even
though he still had bandadge on his right arm. Mary was doing much better
except for the bruises which was still visible.
hj hj
One evening when all the friends, except Chris, were sitting in the dark on
the saloon porch they saw something that almost made their eyes pop out of
their sockets. Chris dressed in, something Ezra would wear, a pair of blue
pants, white shirt and a reddish coat. He had flowers in his left hand and he
went over and knocked on the door to The Clarion office.
hj hj
"How much did I miss when I was shot?" JD was the first to regain his ability
to speak.
"Apparently just as much as we did, kid." Buck said and started laughing.
Soon all six friends laughed heartily together.
Everything was back to normal in the town of Four Corners.

All men dove off their horses and went for cover. Their horses galloped off in
panic.
Ezra and Vin had taken cover behind the saloon, while Chris and Buck hid
behind a few crates. Josiah and Nathan had managed to get into the sheriff's
office. The gunfire continued from everywhere.
Suddenly the gunfire ceased and a man's voice was heard.
Chris grabbed his gun and ran up to Mary who was curled up in the street.
Chris gently pulled her up and he found that she was crying. He cradled her in
his arms and she hugged him tightly. Nathan checked the man for a pulse but
said that he was dead.
Buck had only one thing in mind... He ran up to where JD was lying. As he
stormed in the door he nearly tripped over another dead man. Buck looked at JD
where he lay with his eyes closed. He saw that he had been badly beaten.
In Nathan's room Chris sat by Mary's side as Nathan cleaned her wounds. She
was crying the whole time, because of pain and fear.
Soon the door was opened by Mary dressed in a lavendar dress with a neckline
that dropped lower than the men had seen before. She smiled and took the
flowers from Chris and he gently leaned in and kissed her. Then she took his
hand and pulled him into the office where she closed the door and turned out
the lights.
The six men looked at each other in shock.
