Statement of Purpose

Science. Engineering is the tool I used and plan to use to explore this Grand Canyon. I had an aerial view of it in my school days. I explored its surface in my undergraduate study. I plan to go to its roots in my masters.

Machines, from small spanners to big cranes, always made me to look at them wide-eyed. This passion made me take Mechanical Engineering as my career. I got into one of the most prestigious institutions, College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University. My undergraduate study made me realize the diversity of Mechanical Engineering and gave me a strong foundation in each of the fields. Design and Manufacturing fascinated me the most and I would like to pursue my masters in the same.

My working as an In-plant Trainee in four different industries during my undergraduate study gave me the practical exposure, which backed by my thorough theoretical knowledge prepared me to undertake a research career. I have always felt that there is a theory behind every practical utility, rather than the other way round, and what makes a true engineer is this theoretical knowledge of every practical utility. My undergraduate course satisfied this quest. I did it with all my dedication and was ranked among the top 2% in a class of 120 students.

My two-year course on Network Centered Computing in National Institute of Information Technology gave me the basic knowledge of how computers can be effectively used in various engineering fields. The course helped me a lot in understanding the concepts of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). The more I understood them, the more I got attracted towards them. The use of computers in design to allow humans ‘to design’ rather than ‘to draw’ fascinated me. My hands-on training in AutoCAD, IDEAS (Integrated Design and Engineering Analysis Software) and ANSYS made me realize the practical utility of CAD. My ongoing project, Optimization of Flywheel Design using Finite Element Techniques, introduced me to some advanced concepts. This recent exposure to the inner depths of the field has aroused in me, a desire to do my masters specializing in Computer Aided Design.

Shifting from intellectual to the interpersonal side of me, I have been an active member of the Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME) and the Students Quality Club. Working as a team with other members in organizing meetings and the symposium ‘Q-Quest’ has given me the managerial skills. My active participation in National Cadet Corps and my service to the under-privileged and those in want, in the course, brought out the real personality in me. With the right mix of these interpersonal qualities and sufficient academic background, I am confident that I can make an indelible mark in my chosen field.

After going through the research projects and the courses offered in -----------, I feel that the authority over the subject the institution commands coupled with the intellectually stimulating environment conducive to research would bring out the competitive best in me. I am confident that joining your institution will give me the impetus in the right direction to start my research career and give me enough scope to master my chosen field of interest.
