You have not... because ye ask not
The desire to have and own things is quite legitimate. We need resources and material things in order to live. However, the problem comes in when the pressure to have whatever we want create tensions in our lives and the lives of others. The apostle James,in James 4:1-4 observed that one of the problems that many believers faced at that time (even today) is that the desire to have resulted in wars and fighting amongst the believers. This may also happen in our own lives. The pressure to "obtain" can create all sorts of stress in our lives.
The apostle James observed that the problem was not with the desires, but the way to fulfilling those desires. As a christian, you dont have to fight and kill in order to obtain what you want. The lord Jesus said in Matthews 7:7, " Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock , and the door shall be opened unto you;". The way is to ask from God in prayer. Jesus said "...Men aught always to pray and not faint( Luke 18:1)
The apostle James goes on to mention that while others may have the knowledge to ask from God but their asking fall short of the appropriate motives. They ask, not to glorify God. "They ask a miss that they can consume it upon their lusts" (James 4:3). In Philipians 4:6 the word of God encourages not to be "anxious" for anything but through prayer and supplication, with thanks giving our requests should be known to God. Well, we may ask, Does God not already know what I want? Yes he does. But by taking the step to tell him what He already know shows our faith and humility before God. It shows that we recognise that without Him we can not do anything. In this, God is glorified.Hebrews 11:6 plainly says " without faith it is impossible to please Him..."
Therefore as a child of God we must learn to ask from God and not resort to killing and fighting. Let us also check our motives for aking whatever we want from God.If we ask and ask with the right moitives, God is ready to bless us.
"Now when they heard this,(the gospel), they were cut to heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren , what shall we do"" (Acts 2:37).
