John Matkin is the earliest known ancestor in this line of the Matkin
family. He married Ann Clarke on 5 February 1744/5 at Burton Upon Trent,
Staffordshire, England [1]. John and Ann had seven children. The names of
these children are: Mary, John, Sarah, Mary, William, Joseph, Elizabeth,
William, and Daniel. Since the names of Mary and William repeat, it is
assumed that the first Mary and William died in infancy. Of interest are the
different spellings noted on the record for these children. Mary, John,
Elizabeth and Daniel are spelled Matkin; Sarah is Madkin; Mary, Joseph,
William are Mattkin; and one William is Mattin. [1]
