NOTES:
FIRST GENERATION of JAMES MATKIN of SOUTH CAROLINA LINE
The individual histories in this Matkins Information Center (MIC) Report on
Matkin(s) in St Francois County, Missouri, begins with James Matkin sr. James
Matkin sr lived in Pendleton District of South Carolina in the late 1700's.

The first generation consists of the family of James Matkin sr and his
wife and children.
JMSH1-1 @ MIC: 2/29/88...2/29/88 JAMES MATKIN SR of SC and MO FAMILY LINE of DESCENDANTS
JAMES MATKIN sr (c1745-c1820), 1790 living in Pendleton District, SC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
According to Wake County, North Carolina, Deed Book 11 (page 405), a James
Madkins of Montgomery County, North Carolina, sold land in Wake County to John
Peakeson (perhaps Parkerson) of Virginia on 1 March 1788 for 200 pounds spe-
cie. This 200-acre tract of land was on the west side of Beaver Dam Creek.
Then on 1 November 1788, this same reference (page 444) shows that James sold
land to Isham Freeman, also of Virginia. This 100-acre tract was also on the
west side of Beaver Dam Creek adjoining the Cork Line and sold for 50 pounds
specie. [4,5]
James Matkin sr was in Anderson County, SC on 25 January 1795 when he was one
of the purchasers of the estate property of Jesse Clements [6]. He is listed
in the early Anderson County convenyance books.
James Matkin is shown living in Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1800
[9]. There were four Matkin(s) families living in this district in 1800;
these were: James Matkins (4 males, 3 females, 1 slave), David Madkins (7
males, 4 females), Ezekiel Madkin (2 males, 2 females), and James Madkins (5
males, 3 females).
A James Matkins (either James sr or James jr) purchased 217 acres on Big Creek
on 2 February 1807 from John Nicholson (Book H, page 469) [7]. Eight months
later, James Matkins sr obtained 300 acres on Big Creek from Samuel Lacey
(heir at law) on 28 October 1807 (Book I page 87) [7]. The early grantor
index shows that James sr and James jr were grantors of 86 acres on Big Creek
to Hezikiah Rice on 2 December 1813 (Book M, page 164) [8]. Ezekiel Matkin
was grantor of 50 acres in Anderson county to Henry Hays on 29 November 1814
(Book M, page 309) [8]. James Matkins sold the 217 acres on Big Creek to
Thomas Honey on 2 February 1815 (Book M, page 331) [8]. David Matkin was
grantor to Samuel Williams of 230 acres on Big Creek on 28 October 1816 (Book
M, page 617) [8]. This shows that a James sr and a James Matkin jr, as well
as an Ezekiel and a David Matkin were property owners on Big Creek in Anderson
County, SC, between 1807 and 1816.
A St Genevieve County, Missouri Territory record showing the purchase of land
by Leroy Matkin was witnessed by James Matkin jr [11]. Since the reference is
made of a James jr, it is assumed that a James sr was living in the area at
this time.
This James Madkins is assumed to be the same James Matkin (sr) who is believed
to be the father of five brothers who migrated to Missouri. He is listed in
the 1822 tax records of St Francois County, Missouri [1]. Edie Darrah, a
long-time Matkin family researcher assumed children of James Matkin sr to be:
David Matkin, born about 1766, his wife may have been Izabel; Thomas Matkin,
born about 1770; Ezekiel Matkin, born about 1775; James Matkin, born about
1777, married to Anne; and William, born about 1782.
NOTES:
1. The Anderson County, SC Will Book, 1793-1793 (FHL film 22859) does not
list any Matkin(s) names.
2. There appear to be four different Matkin(s) families living in Pendleton
County, South Carolina in 1800 (FHL film 22835). These are:
males females slaves
p. 22 hh 216 James Matkins 1-2-0-1-0 2-1-0-1-0 0-1
p. 29 hh 597 David Wadkins 4-1-1-1-0 1-2-0-1-0 0-0
p. 55 hh 796 Ezekiel Madkin 1-0-1-0-0 1-0-1-0-0 0-0
p. 57 hh 866 James Madkins 1-1-2-0-1 1-1-1-0-0 0-0
The census counts are arranged as shown on the form, i.e. under 10, 10
to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, and over 45. The fourth entry above is
assumed to be James Matkin sr. This James Madkins is over 45 years old
or born before 1755 and apparently without a living wife. The first
James Matkins is assumed to be James Matkin jr, age 26-45 or born 1755-1774. The David Wadkins is assumed to be David Matkin, also age 26-45.
Ezekiel Madkin, age 16-26, would have been born 1774-1784.
3. R. W. Simpson's book, History of Old Pendleton District with a genealogy
of leading families of the district does not include any Matkin, Love,
or Crow families. (LDS/FHL film 1036802, item 6).
4. The book, Book of the Dead, written November 1968 (LDS/FHL film 1303177)
lists a lot of Wellborn and Watkins names but no Matkins or Loves.
Release of Samuel Lacy to James Matkins, Senr, 18 Aug 1801
This is early James Matkins Senry in Pendleton District.
Release of John Nicholson to James Matkins, 9 March 1805
Since this date is later than the time that the Matkin's moved into this
area of South Carolina, I assume that this is James Matkin jr.
Release of James Matkin to Thomas Honey, 19 October 1807
This identifies the wife of this James Matkin as Anne.
Release of James Matkin senr, James Matkin junr to Hezikiah Rice, 24 March
1810
This establishes that there both a James Matkin sr and James Matkin jr.
Release of Ezekiel Matkin to Henry Hayes, 29 September 1814
Since there was no record of a wife signing over her dower rights, etc.,
the whereabouts of Ezekiel's wife are questioned. Children are shown
for Ezekiel until 1826 when daughter Rua Ann Matkin was born. Ezekiel's
first child is believed to be Elizabeth, born 1798. His daughter Jane
was born about 1814, near the time of this land sale.
It identifies a Benjamin Matkin (perhaps a brother of Ezekiel)
Release of David Matkin to Samuel Wilcox, 5 March 1816
This identifies the wife of David Matkin as Ezabel (Isabel).
NOTES:
FIRST GENERATION of JAMES MATKIN of SOUTH CAROLINA LINE
The individual histories in this Matkins Information Center (MIC) Report on
Matkin(s) in St Francois County, Missouri, begins with James Matkin sr. James
Matkin sr lived in Pendleton District of South Carolina in the late 1700's.
It is believed that he may have migrated with some of his sons to Missouri.
The first generation consists of the family of James Matkin sr and his
wife and children.
JMSH1-1 @ MIC: 2/29/88...2/29/88 JAMES MATKIN SR of SC and MO FAMILY LINE of DESCENDANTS
JAMES MATKIN sr (c1745-c1820), 1790 living in Pendleton District, SC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
According to Wake County, North Carolina, Deed Book 11 (page 405), a James
Madkins of Montgomery County, North Carolina, sold land in Wake County to John
Peakeson (perhaps Parkerson) of Virginia on 1 March 1788 for 200 pounds spe-
cie. This 200-acre tract of land was on the west side of Beaver Dam Creek.
Then on 1 November 1788, this same reference (page 444) shows that James sold
land to Isham Freeman, also of Virginia. This 100-acre tract was also on the
west side of Beaver Dam Creek adjoining the Cork Line and sold for 50 pounds
specie. [4,5]
James Matkin sr was in Anderson County, SC on 25 January 1795 when he was one
of the purchasers of the estate property of Jesse Clements [6]. He is listed
in the early Anderson County convenyance books.
James Matkin is shown living in Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1800
[9]. There were four Matkin(s) families living in this district in 1800;
these were: James Matkins (4 males, 3 females, 1 slave), David Madkins (7
males, 4 females), Ezekiel Madkin (2 males, 2 females), and James Madkins (5
males, 3 females).
A James Matkins (either James sr or James jr) purchased 217 acres on Big Creek
on 2 February 1807 from John Nicholson (Book H, page 469) [7]. Eight months
later, James Matkins sr obtained 300 acres on Big Creek from Samuel Lacey
(heir at law) on 28 October 1807 (Book I page 87) [7]. The early grantor
index shows that James sr and James jr were grantors of 86 acres on Big Creek
to Hezikiah Rice on 2 December 1813 (Book M, page 164) [8]. Ezekiel Matkin
was grantor of 50 acres in Anderson county to Henry Hays on 29 November 1814
(Book M, page 309) [8]. James Matkins sold the 217 acres on Big Creek to
Thomas Honey on 2 February 1815 (Book M, page 331) [8]. David Matkin was
grantor to Samuel Williams of 230 acres on Big Creek on 28 October 1816 (Book
M, page 617) [8]. This shows that a James sr and a James Matkin jr, as well
as an Ezekiel and a David Matkin were property owners on Big Creek in Anderson
County, SC, between 1807 and 1816.
A St Genevieve County, Missouri Territory record showing the purchase of land
by Leroy Matkin was witnessed by James Matkin jr [11]. Since the reference is
made of a James jr, it is assumed that a James sr was living in the area at
this time.
This James Madkins is assumed to be the same James Matkin (sr) who is believed
to be the father of five brothers who migrated to Missouri. He is listed in
the 1822 tax records of St Francois County, Missouri [1]. Edie Darrah, a
long-time Matkin family researcher assumed children of James Matkin sr to be:
David Matkin, born about 1766, his wife may have been Izabel; Thomas Matkin,
born about 1770; Ezekiel Matkin, born about 1775; James Matkin, born about
1777, married to Anne; and William, born about 1782.

NOTES:
1. The Anderson County, SC Will Book, 1793-1793 (FHL film 22859) does not
list any Matkin(s) names.
2. There appear to be four different Matkin(s) families living in Pendleton
County, South Carolina in 1800 (FHL film 22835). These are:
males females slaves
p. 22 hh 216 James Matkins 1-2-0-1-0 2-1-0-1-0 0-1
p. 29 hh 597 David Wadkins 4-1-1-1-0 1-2-0-1-0 0-0
p. 55 hh 796 Ezekiel Madkin 1-0-1-0-0 1-0-1-0-0 0-0
p. 57 hh 866 James Madkins 1-1-2-0-1 1-1-1-0-0 0-0
The census counts are arranged as shown on the form, i.e. under 10, 10
to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, and over 45. The fourth entry above is
assumed to be James Matkin sr. This James Madkins is over 45 years old
or born before 1755 and apparently without a living wife. The first
James Matkins is assumed to be James Matkin jr, age 26-45 or born 1755-1774. The David Wadkins is assumed to be David Matkin, also age 26-45.
Ezekiel Madkin, age 16-26, would have been born 1774-1784.
3. R. W. Simpson's book, History of Old Pendleton District with a genealogy
of leading families of the district does not include any Matkin, Love,
or Crow families. (LDS/FHL film 1036802, item 6).
4. The book, Book of the Dead, written November 1968 (LDS/FHL film 1303177)
lists a lot of Wellborn and Watkins names but no Matkins or Loves.

Release of Samuel Lacy to James Matkins, Senr, 18 Aug 1801
This is early James Matkins Senry in Pendleton District.
Release of John Nicholson to James Matkins, 9 March 1805
Since this date is later than the time that the Matkin's moved into this
area of South Carolina, I assume that this is James Matkin jr.
Release of James Matkin to Thomas Honey, 19 October 1807
This identifies the wife of this James Matkin as Anne.
Release of James Matkin senr, James Matkin junr to Hezikiah Rice, 24 March
1810
This establishes that there both a James Matkin sr and James Matkin jr.
Release of Ezekiel Matkin to Henry Hayes, 29 September 1814
Since there was no record of a wife signing over her dower rights, etc.,
the whereabouts of Ezekiel's wife are questioned. Children are shown
for Ezekiel until 1826 when daughter Rua Ann Matkin was born. Ezekiel's
first child is believed to be Elizabeth, born 1798. His daughter Jane
was born about 1814, near the time of this land sale.
It identifies a Benjamin Matkin (perhaps a brother of Ezekiel)
Release of David Matkin to Samuel Wilcox, 5 March 1816
This identifies the wife of David Matkin as Ezabel (Isabel).

It is believed that he may have migrated with some of his sons to Missouri.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
According to Wake County, North Carolina, Deed Book 11 (page 405), a James
Madkins of Montgomery County, North Carolina, sold land in Wake County to John
Peakeson (perhaps Parkerson) of Virginia on 1 March 1788 for 200 pounds spe-
cie. This 200-acre tract of land was on the west side of Beaver Dam Creek.
Then on 1 November 1788, this same reference (page 444) shows that James sold
land to Isham Freeman, also of Virginia. This 100-acre tract was also on the
west side of Beaver Dam Creek adjoining the Cork Line and sold for 50 pounds
specie. [4,5]
James Matkin sr was in Anderson County, SC on 25 January 1795 when he was one
of the purchasers of the estate property of Jesse Clements [6]. He is listed
in the early Anderson County convenyance books.
James Matkin is shown living in Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1800
[9]. There were four Matkin(s) families living in this district in 1800;
these were: James Matkins (4 males, 3 females, 1 slave), David Madkins (7
males, 4 females), Ezekiel Madkin (2 males, 2 females), and James Madkins (5
males, 3 females).
A James Matkins (either James sr or James jr) purchased 217 acres on Big Creek
on 2 February 1807 from John Nicholson (Book H, page 469) [7]. Eight months
later, James Matkins sr obtained 300 acres on Big Creek from Samuel Lacey
(heir at law) on 28 October 1807 (Book I page 87) [7]. The early grantor
index shows that James sr and James jr were grantors of 86 acres on Big Creek
to Hezikiah Rice on 2 December 1813 (Book M, page 164) [8]. Ezekiel Matkin
was grantor of 50 acres in Anderson county to Henry Hays on 29 November 1814
(Book M, page 309) [8]. James Matkins sold the 217 acres on Big Creek to
Thomas Honey on 2 February 1815 (Book M, page 331) [8]. David Matkin was
grantor to Samuel Williams of 230 acres on Big Creek on 28 October 1816 (Book
M, page 617) [8]. This shows that a James sr and a James Matkin jr, as well
as an Ezekiel and a David Matkin were property owners on Big Creek in Anderson
County, SC, between 1807 and 1816.
A St Genevieve County, Missouri Territory record showing the purchase of land
by Leroy Matkin was witnessed by James Matkin jr [11]. Since the reference is
made of a James jr, it is assumed that a James sr was living in the area at
this time.
This James Madkins is assumed to be the same James Matkin (sr) who is believed
to be the father of five brothers who migrated to Missouri. He is listed in
the 1822 tax records of St Francois County, Missouri [1]. Edie Darrah, a
long-time Matkin family researcher assumed children of James Matkin sr to be:
David Matkin, born about 1766, his wife may have been Izabel; Thomas Matkin,
born about 1770; Ezekiel Matkin, born about 1775; James Matkin, born about
1777, married to Anne; and William, born about 1782.
NOTES:
1. The Anderson County, SC Will Book, 1793-1793 (FHL film 22859) does not
list any Matkin(s) names.
2. There appear to be four different Matkin(s) families living in Pendleton
County, South Carolina in 1800 (FHL film 22835). These are:
males females slaves
p. 22 hh 216 James Matkins 1-2-0-1-0 2-1-0-1-0 0-1
p. 29 hh 597 David Wadkins 4-1-1-1-0 1-2-0-1-0 0-0
p. 55 hh 796 Ezekiel Madkin 1-0-1-0-0 1-0-1-0-0 0-0
p. 57 hh 866 James Madkins 1-1-2-0-1 1-1-1-0-0 0-0
The census counts are arranged as shown on the form, i.e. under 10, 10
to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, and over 45. The fourth entry above is
assumed to be James Matkin sr. This James Madkins is over 45 years old
or born before 1755 and apparently without a living wife. The first
James Matkins is assumed to be James Matkin jr, age 26-45 or born 1755-1774. The David Wadkins is assumed to be David Matkin, also age 26-45.
Ezekiel Madkin, age 16-26, would have been born 1774-1784.
3. R. W. Simpson's book, History of Old Pendleton District with a genealogy
of leading families of the district does not include any Matkin, Love,
or Crow families. (LDS/FHL film 1036802, item 6).
4. The book, Book of the Dead, written November 1968 (LDS/FHL film 1303177)
lists a lot of Wellborn and Watkins names but no Matkins or Loves.
Release of Samuel Lacy to James Matkins, Senr, 18 Aug 1801
This is early James Matkins Senry in Pendleton District.
Release of John Nicholson to James Matkins, 9 March 1805
Since this date is later than the time that the Matkin's moved into this
area of South Carolina, I assume that this is James Matkin jr.
Release of James Matkin to Thomas Honey, 19 October 1807
This identifies the wife of this James Matkin as Anne.
Release of James Matkin senr, James Matkin junr to Hezikiah Rice, 24 March
1810
This establishes that there both a James Matkin sr and James Matkin jr.
Release of Ezekiel Matkin to Henry Hayes, 29 September 1814
Since there was no record of a wife signing over her dower rights, etc.,
the whereabouts of Ezekiel's wife are questioned. Children are shown
for Ezekiel until 1826 when daughter Rua Ann Matkin was born. Ezekiel's
first child is believed to be Elizabeth, born 1798. His daughter Jane
was born about 1814, near the time of this land sale.
It identifies a Benjamin Matkin (perhaps a brother of Ezekiel)
Release of David Matkin to Samuel Wilcox, 5 March 1816
This identifies the wife of David Matkin as Ezabel (Isabel).
