EZEKIAL MATKIN FAMILY LINE of DESCENDANTS
PREFACE
Ezekiel Matkin of South Carolina is one of the early Matkin family members
living in the United States during the eighteenth century. Since he parents
of Ezekiel Matkin of South Carolina have not been determined, he is considered
as the first generation in his line. Some researchers believe that a James
Matkin sr living in Pendleton District, South Carolina, in the late 1700's
could have been Ezekiel's father.
James Matkin sr was living in Pendleton District of South Carolina in the late
1700's. He had children which migrated to Missouri and Alabama. He is
consided the earliest known ancestor of this branch of the Matkins family. So
the first generation of Ezekiel Matkin family may be the second generation of
the James Matkin sr family line. As presently identified five sons migrated
from South Carolina to Missouri and three sons including Ezekiel migrated from
South Carolina to Alabama. There is no proof that James Matkin sr is the
father of these eight but it is the assumption of one researcher.
The brothers who migrated to Missouri are:
James Matkin jr (c1776-1840), born SC, died MO, married Anne
Hiram Matkin (c1798-1857), born SC, died MO, married Charity (1806-),
born SC
David Matkin (c1780-),
William Matkin (c1781-1827), born SC, died MO, married Nancy (1784-)
born VA,
Daniel Matkin (c1800-), married Sarah Thaxton.
The brothers and sister who migrated to Alabama are:
Ezekial Matkins,
Eliza Matkins,
Zedekeah Matkins,
Ophelia Matkins,
The history profile of James Matkins sr follows:
JAMES MATKIN sr, born South Carolina ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James Matkin sr is shown in the tax records of St Francois County, Missouri
for 1822. He may have died shortly afterwards. There is no reference to him
in the Missouri census records. There is evidence in the Pendleton County,
South Carolina, deed records that he was selling land shortly before this
time. [1]
EZEKIEL MATKIN (ca 1775-), living in South Carolina, 1800-1810
maybe son of James Matkins sr
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ezekial Matkins is believed to be a son of James Matkins sr [1]. According to
1830 Census of Morgan County, Alabama, he was born between 1770 and 1780 [3].
Ezekial Matkins lived in South Carolina about 1805 - 1811. He is listed in
the Pendleton District of South Carolina in the 1800 [10] and 1810 Census [2].
In this census, there was one male (16-26) who is assumed to be Ezekiel and
one female (16-26) who is assumed to be his wife and one boy and one girl both
under ten years. Based on this census data, Ezekiel was born between 1774 and
1780, probably about 1775. A Thomas Crow was living in this same district
(i.e. Fairfield) as Ezekiel was in 1810 [2]. Since Ezekiel named his oldest
son, Thomas Crow, I believe (but have no evidence) that Ezekiel's wife was a
daughter of Thomas Crow. Ezekiel married about 1796 probably in Pendleton
District, South Carolina [18].
On 29 November 1814, Ezekiel Matkin sold 50 acres of land in Anderson County
(Pendleton District) to Henry Hayes (Book M, page 309) [8]. This may have
been just prior to the family moving onto Alabama.
Ezekial Matkins was living in Alabama by the time his son Ezekiel W Matkins
was born in 1816 [2]. On 25 December 1817, Ezekial was living "within the
limits then known and established as County of Elk and now within limits since
that time established for said County of Madison." He served as a juror in
1818 at Madison County [3,20].
A Zekel Matkin was living at Huntsville in Madison County in 1819 [10]. By
1826 Ezekial sr was living in Morgan County, Alabama, near his sister,
Ophelia. Ophelia Matkins, had been assumed to be the wife of James Love, but
Morgan County probate records show that a Rosanna was the widow of James Love
[17]. Rosanna is believed to be the same generation as Ezekiel. She may have
been Ezekiel's sister and Ophelia their mother [17]. Ezekial sr had two sons
who married the twin daughters of James Love. [2] Ezekial is listed in the
1830 Morgan County, Alabama census [3].
Ezekial Matkins is believed to have had five sons and seven daughters [3]. In
Marriages of Morgan County, Alabama, 1818-1896 by Elbert J Minter [9] shows 14
Matkin family marriages, including seven of Ezekiel's children, three of his
son, Durham Matkin's children and two of his son, Ezekiel W Matkin's children.
Alabama law required that a female be 18 and a male 21 prior to marriage.

may be daughter of James Matkins sr
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ophelia Matkin is believed to be a daughter of James Matkins sr of South
Carolina and a sister of Ezekiel, Zedakiah, and Eliza Matkin, all from South
Carolina. She was probably born in the 1790's. [2]
Ophelia Matkin married James Love [3]. James and Ophelia had at least two
daughters and one son. These daughters, Malinda and Lucinda, married sons of
Ophelia's brother, Ezekiel. The son, John A Love, is an ancestor of the
compiler of much of this family's history, Joyce Dashiell Petty.
James and Ophelia (Matkin) Love lived near Ophelia'a brother Ezekiel Matkins
in Madison County, Alabama, and later in Morgan County, Alabama [6]
Jedekiah Matkin, who married Sarah Majors on 30 December 1819 in Madison
Madkins. Madison County Marriage Book 3, page 7, shows that a Jedekiah
Madkins and Sarah Majors were licensed on 20 December 1819 and solemnized the
ceremony on 31 December 1819 [5].
Zedekeah Matkins may have died on 9 November 1826 [2]. An E Madkin (possibly
Ezekiel) was the admistrator of Jedekiah's estate [4].
EZEKIAL MATKIN FAMILY LINE of DESCENDANTS
DANIEL MATKINS (-),
may be son of James Matkins sr
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Daniel Matkins is shown in the Probate Records of Madison County, Alabama
[1]. This record, from Probate Record Book 3, pages 62-63, is an appraisal
and account of sale of the estate of Daniel Matkins that is dated 31 October
1823. I assume that this Daniel Matkins must have died about 1823. Also it
is assumed that this Daniel Matkins came from Pendleton District, South
Carolina, like others who migrated into northeastern Alabama. If this Daniel
did indeed die about 1823, then he should not be confused with Daniel Matkin
who also came from South Carolina and migrated onto Kentucky and St Francois
County, Missouri.
The probate record identifies purchasers at the estate sale [1]. These were:
Susanna Matkin, Melinda Matkin, Samuel Connor, Francis Crow, John Shinott,
Ezekiel Matkin, John Stafford, Andrew Ice, Thomas Ice, Joseph Taylor, Isaac
Weeks, Richard Shackelford, William Thomas, William Hickenbottom, Thomas Davis
and Anthony H Metcalf. Francis Crow was the administrator. Francis Crow was
the husband of Elizabeth Matkins [2]. Ezekiel Matkin came into Alabama about
1816 [3]. Susanna and Melinda Matkin are not identified.
