Detection is limited to self-examination by you and to mammograms.
By performing regular monthly examinations you get use to the texture and shape of the breast tissue allowing detection of finding a small lump easier.
Mammograms should be started somewhere within 35-40 years of age. The low radiation tests can detect very small lumps undectable by self-examination.
If a lump is found a biopsy may be done or lumpectomy to determine if it indeed is malignant or not.
But remember you need to use both techniques available to detection, do not skip one because you do the other. Early detection is your best defense against this terrible disease.
Symptoms range from feeling a lump felt by you, your doctor or found through mammograms to unusual bleeding or discharge, concave nipple, changes in shape, size or appearance, and failure of nipple to become erect.
The best prevention for this disease is early detection outside of triing
to control the risk factors that can be controlled such as smoking.
