Danger: For many years I have featured levees as the centerpoint or as an ancillary subject of my rides. Recently a rider fell off a levee and has sought to bring legal action against the magazine for leading him to believe they were safe. That problem has been dealt with. To prevent any further injuries due to people not using common sense, I have been told by councel to inform my readers that levees are dangerous in many ways. If you have not grown up around them, best just stay the hell off. I cannot list all the dangers. I would suggest looking up "Dangers of Mountain Climbing" and let that be your guide though that maybe a little "over the top". Below is not a toy. It is a full grown motorcycle. You can imagine the altitude that some of these levees can achieve. This one is a foothill compared to where we are going. If you understand the dangers that levees can have, Please Press OK. If not, just don't press it. Fred, you didn't press it, did you?
I'll start this trip at the top of this levee . The air is good up here and the levee offers a fine place to think and relax, which I did. In the Pre-Publish Announcement [PPA, Mark] I send to those who contribute here, I said that a reader had mentioned that she and her husband had ridden to Mississippi. Here in the thin, cool, alpine air, I decided to do likewise, but with my own criteria. La.105 is one of the gateways to Natchez, the first place to enter Mississippi above St.Fancisville. It is just 90 miles from my house and a very do-able ride. I've done Natchez, somewhat, and this time I would concentrate on hooking up with the little roads south of Natchez that ride the loess down to St.Francisville where I would re-cross the river. I came up to this point, just above Bayou Current and stopped. This is the last unfenced stretch of levee until you get to Simmesport. I have other pictures from its heigths. Some, below.

The "borrow bayou" did not freeze over this year though it appears to be. There goes the ice fishing.

Turning away from the water and preparing to scale the peak of the levee one more time, I shot a picture of the green. In some states you can get big bucks for green in March. People are at their ends with gray, white, and brown. Download this picture and send it to the needy. It's all about sharing..

I reached Simmesport which is pretty much as far as you can go on 105. See that bridge up ahead? Hold on, we are going over it. It is across one of the most frightful river in the world, the Atchafalaya. I'll tell you a little more about that river and what makes it so frightful in the next segment. [Experience in the magazine business has taught me to create a " hook" to get readers to the next page. The first hook was "the bridge" and the second was information onf the Atchafalaya". I have seen students from LSU and other schools visiting the magazine, no doubt in search of writing toot-ledge. I will, from time to time, share some of my secrets to help those who have made the pilgrimage. I will also watch my language knowing that children are on board.]
