Beowulf was killed by the touch of a dragon's claw. During his last battle, the mighty beast delivered a mortal wound to Beowulf before his only remaining companion, Wiglaf, could come to his aid. So even when the two managed to kill the fire wyrm, the day was cast in sorrow for a great king and warrior was soon lost. Keeping true to the king's last request, a great lighthouse was built over the grave to serve as both a cairn for the king and as a beacon to watch over the people Beowulf had loved so. Twelve of the best warriors circled the cairn once it was completed and told of all of the great deeds of the Geat's king. The world had lost a warrior, king, and hero that was beyond any comparison. The worst part of this loss was that it could have been avoided. If the warriors who had accompanied Beowulf had stayed true to their word and helped him in his time of need instead of fleeing like frightened children, Beowulf might have been saved. Honor is the one thing that should always be kept above question; without any mar or tainting. One's word could sometimes be the only thing standing between failure and victory. If only one warrior had raised a sword sooner against the dragon, the outcome might have changed. Thus, always remain true to one's promises because one never knows when someone else is depending upon that to save them. |
