How to install the MegaStat add-in to Excel

This add-in will work with Excel version 5 or later; it will work with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/98/NT and MS Office 95 or 97 or 2000.  If you install MegaStat from an older CD from the book, it may not run due to having expired; thus it is best to follow the directions below to get the current (unexpired) version.

  1. First you must download the file megastat.exe to somewhere on your system. If you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser, left click on these links and you'll be asked if you want to save them, and to where on your system. If you're using Netscape as your browser, RIGHT click on the links and select Save Link As ... to save the files onto your system.
  2. Make sure that Excel is not running.
  3. Double-click on the file megastat.exe that you downloaded and follow the instructions.
  4. Start Excel, select Tools on the main menu bar, and then select Add-ins (you have to have a spreadsheet file open — an empty blank one is OK). You should (don't you just LOVE it when computer guys use the subjunctive mood, like "should"?) see Megastat/XL in the list of add-ins. Check the Megastat/XL checkbox and then OK. The Tools/Add-ins option takes a lot of time (up to a minute) on slower systems so be patient.
  5. At this point you should (there's that "should" again) see MegaStat as a new item on the main menu bar.
  6. Click MegaStat and then Utilities to see some of the things the program can do other than computations. If all else fails, try the Help System.
  7. Read the "General Operating Procedures" of the Help System and refer to Help for specific questions.
