SCREWBALLS AND HOW NOT TO BE ONE
There is something about psionics that makes some folks go nuts. I'm not sure what it is, I only know that it happens all too frequently for me to be comfortable. A person can seem perfectly normal one day and the next be looking furtively out the window wondering if the space aliens are coming for him, or the big, bad government is spying on him. Or worse, the "Dark Forces" have taken an interest in him and are screwing with his results. And then there the megalomaniacs out there convinced that they rule the world.
After years of encountering these people there are times when I am seriously inclined to abandon the project and take up something safe, like skydiving.
Well, obviously I'm not going to. But when you get into this this stuff, work real hard to keep your head screwed on tight. Just because you are working with things that really should not work and making things happen that should not happen does not mean that the entire universe works that way. You are still going to have money troubles, you will still be surrounded by idiots and you are still possessed of a body that is designed by an idiot and created by elves which has a tendency to seriously malfunction at inconvenient moments and as you grow older those moments become more frequent.
On the other hand you can make things happen that shouldn't and you can make life really interesting for people. There is nothing wrong with embracing madness as long as you realize that you are embracing madness and can go back to the world of sanity when you need to. Recognize that the notion of causing something to happen by turning dials on a box is sheer lunacy and the fact that it works does not make it any less lunatic.
Once you can manage that, you can enjoy psionics and not become a candidate for the padded room because once you can laugh at yourself and say, "Yes! I am crazy!" you can deal with everyday reality and not spend a lot of time worrying about the space people.
