1901 Tejfalu - 1966 Tejfalusziget

Ornithologist

Education: Civic School- Somorja, College of Agriculture- Magyaróvár.

Work: For 45 years he observed and recorded the very rich birdlife along the Danube river, notably around Tejfalu, Tejfalusziget, Dunakiliti and Rajka. He methodically and scientifically catalogued the birds, their habitats and set up a register of their eggs, that populated the Upper-Csallóköz and Upper-Szigetköz regions of the Danube. His work was closely observed by the Hungarian Institute of Ornithology and the Hungarian National Museum. His collection included 141 bird species and 2600 eggs.

He bequeathed his entire collection to the Institute of Ornithology, Budapest.

His research extended to other areas. His relevant manuscripts record many of the superstitions, mystic beliefs, animal breading practices, folklores and nursery tales of the above two Danube regions.

He recorded a large part of Tejfalu’s own as well as its Common-lands (Közbirtokosság) history.

Published work: “Csiba Lajos DiáriumaIntegrita Kiadó, Somorja, (Šamorin), Slovakia.

*1926 Véstö -

Retired Captain of the Hungarian People’s Army, currently resides in Switzerland. At the outbreak of the uprising in October 1956 was the officer in command of the Kilián barracks ( Üllöi út), just across the road from the famous Corvin Köz that played such a central role during those days of high drama in Hungarian history.

He found himself in the most difficult situation of being between the rock and a hard place.

The barracks came under periodic attacks by the revolutionary forces as well as Soviet Army. As a soldier, it was his duty to defend and protect the barracks in his care; as a Hungarian, he had to decide whether to join the Revolution or remain on side of the old regime that was facing annihilation. In the interim he obeyed the (very few) directions that he and his immediate superior, Pál Maléter, received from the Ministry of Defence and the constitutional government of Imre Nagy. (Pál Maléter was tried and hanged in 1958)

He may have chosen to sit on the fence and await the outcome. We do not know. Undoubtedly the pressure on him was enormous, and those who have not been so tested should be slow to judge him.

In the end he was forced to flee the country and seek final asylum in Switzerland where he now lives with his second wife. Whilst a refugee in December 1956 in Yugoslavia, he committed his experience of those truly testing days to paper before it faded from his memory. His “Napló” (“Diary”) was published in the “SzivárványUSA, in October 1988.

He had been invited to contribute a brief autobiography for these pages. He chose not to respond.

Children: Judit (Germany), András (Hungary)
