I believe some of the best language
learning opportunities are out of the classroom. When I was teaching
at an IELI I tried to provide such opportunities for my
students. Together, we would go places and they
would discover
the local area. In this way, they discovered the world of the target
language. This empowered them to go out on their own more
often.
Not only do I
believe that it is empowering for ESL students to go into the world out of
the classroom, but I also believe that the world outside the classroom provides
situations for language learning that don't normally occur in the
classroom.
Finally, and most
important of all, trips out of the classroom make the students feel much closer, and
being much closer helps foster more active participation in language classes.
