Entry for January 13, 2007
well, here i am starting a new blog-thingie.....just for fun, i guess! not much happens here, but.....you know.....i've been having fun lately going through some of my boxes of cassettes - lots of old stuff that i haven't thought about in a while! i had forgotten stuff like New Order's "Technique" and the Dead Milkmen's "Not Richard, But Dick". Social Distortion's "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell". Ground Round's "Duct Tape". some old home recordings of my pal Dustin Heald, plus a couple different tapes of his old band Me & Mark. classics! especially the Ground Round and Me & Mark stuff - that's not only classic music but it's also Santa Rosa brewed music, as well! this city has had some rad bands!i really need to dig into some of the other boxes and see what else i've forgotten about, heheh!i've been reading Charles Bukowski's "Ham on Rye", which is a book about his childhood. pretty depressing stuff! i can see why he ended up drinking. it really is a sad story, but his writing just keeps making you come back to it. i've only read a few other things from Bukowski ("Hot Water Music", "Last Night of the Earth Poems", and "Pulp" years ago.....), but this is probably my favorite, even with how bleak it is. it's mostly his reasoning behind people's motives which, while extremely fueled by his anger, is pretty spot on, as far as i see it. he has a good idea of what it takes to "work" with and succeed in society. i have my own problems with it, myself, and in a way i agree with a lot of what he says. i'm going to follow this book with another Bukowski - which one, i'm not sure yet. i guess it will depend on what i can find here in town, which should be easy since Black Sparrow used to publish his books, and they were (still are? not sure if they're still around) based in Santa Rosa. convenient, eh?a little over a week ago (1/5) i turned 30 years old, which is still odd to me. in some ways it feels right, but mostly it just feels strange. like i missed half my life or something. i still feel like i'm 15 years old, teenager in a 30 year old future-trip......some people (gone now) would totally agree with that, heheh.....i had a great birthday, though - celebrated it for 3 days, actually! lots of fun, food, family and friends - all of it! i got some cool gifts (got the Cherry Point's "Black Witchery" CD from Gerry, which was awesome!!! totally rad CD!!!), saw a movie ("Rocky Balboa" - it was pretty cool!), ate tons of food i didn't pay for (ah, birthdays!!! hahahaha!), yeah yeah yeah! fun times, indeed.....the netlabel i run with Jared, B&R Records ( www.brrecords.com ), has just released a huge experimental compilation - a few months in the making! - and it's really awesome! there are some really rad songs on there, and i was very happy with the response we got to our call for submissions. so SO cool!!! i love this comp! it's really fun and has lots of surprises. it's actually the first in a compilation series we're doing - "Do You Ever Dream?" - and the second volume is pretty much ready to release, as well! and, the third volume is taking submissions as i type this! it's really exciting for me to get a collection of this calibur out. i'm really proud of the people i've assembled for these - it's solid proof that the experimental "genre" (???) is alive, kicking, screaming, modulationg and twisting knobs! and, with the many different styles featured on this comp, it's also proof of the creativity out there. plus i'm really happy with the darph/nadeR song on there (the duo i'm in with Jared Butler), it's really some of our more interesting work, if you ask me.i've actually been really happy with a lot of the newer nadeR stuff. this direction we took about a year ago now is turning into something i really enjoy working on! our live set is coming together rather nicely, after a fairly successful show a bit ago down in San Francisco, and we have another show down there next month. should be fun! Shrew Florist (the noise supergroup with Gerry, Jared, Veronica, and myself) are also heading into some rad times - our last recording a bit ago is probably one of the best we've ever done! it really has a great sound to it. expect that to be released soon by B&R. we're also in the planning stages for a live Shrew set, which is going to be so so awesome!!! we've never played live anywhere before as the Shrew, so this will be a real treat. we're all really excited!we recently got 'drinking coffee from counselor troi's head' (AKA 'troi') back together (the noise rock band that Jared and i are in with Ken Lantz and my brother, Travis), after a long hiatus. hopefully we'll be having Joe Gibson back in action, and then the original troi line-up (with the addition of my brother, who was in Troi 2) will be back together! it will be very awesome, and has been already so far the couple of times we've gotten together. some really great recordings have gone down so far, and we've even released our first release back a little while ago on B&R. i love troi, and am really happy and excited that we're back!well, i guess that's enough freeform thought stuff for now! i'm sure i'll think of something else soon, heheh!-coryp.s. - "Batman Beyond" (the cartoon show that aired years ago) is AWESOME!!!!! i watched the entire first season yesterday...um...online....and it was really fun! lot more layers going on then the first seasons of "Batman: the Animated Series", and "Beyond" is a pretty good precursor as to what they would eventually do with the super rad "Superman: the Animated Series", which had a classic first season! i'll be digging into season 2 of "Beyond" probably later on today, so hopefully it stands up!
