75-year puja of Old Post Office Para
COOCHBEHAR, Sept. 28: Old Post Office Para Durgotsav Committee is observing the platinum anniversary (75-year) of their puja this year. A National award winner teacher Mr Sudhangshu Pal inaugurated the puja this evening. Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad sabhadhipati Mr Jnanendra Chandra Chanda was also present among the distinguished guests at the inauguration programme.
The secretary of the Old Post Office Para Puja Committee Mr Sajal Kanti Sarkar (Chandan) said that they decorated the idol of Durga and Her other associates as symbols of peace. A number of white pigeons are placed here replacing the weapons. No war but peace is the theme of this puja on its platinum anniversary, he said. The estimated budget of this year’s puja is Rs 9-lakh.
The community Durga puja of Old Post Office Para started dated back in 1931. Many consider it as the first community puja in Cooch Behar. Bani Mandir Club was established in 1931 and the members of that club were the organisers of the puja. A renowned artisan Nitai Pal had made the idol of the Durga. From then on the puja is going on at Old Post Office Para in Cooch Behar town. []

Bhagat Singh remembered
COOCHBEHAR, Sept. 28: Cooch Behar district committee of All India Youth League observed the birth centenary of great patriot Bhagat Singh in different areas in Cooch Behar district today.
General secretary of Cooch Behar district committee of AIYL Md Abdur Rauf said that the birth centenary of martyr Bhagat Singh was observed at Dinhata, Cooch Behar, Mekhliganj, Haldibari, Sitai, Sitalkuchi, Khagrabari and other places to pay homage to the great patriot who was a symbol of anti-imperialist struggle. The AIYL will observe the birth centenary for the next one year to improve the morale of the youths and also to aware them about their rights and duties to the society, Mr Rauf added. []
PG courses launched at ABN Seal College
COOCHBEHAR, Sept. 28: Post Graduate courses in Sanskrit and Zoology are going to be introduced from the current academic session in Acharya Brajendra Nath Seal College (formerly Victoria College), the front ranking college in Cooch Behar district.
ABN Seal College sources said that a letter confirming the approval of introduction of the PG courses arrived at the college from the inspector of colleges of North Bengal University Dr S Sanyal today. The letter was addressed to the principal of the college Dr BK Roy. The much-awaited PG courses at ABN Seal College in Sanskrit and Zoology will be of immense help to the students of this region. 25 students will be able to get admission in Sanskrit and 20 in Zoology courses.
