CPM-Trinamul clash in Cooch Behar

COOCH BEHAR, Aug. 14: During a clash between CPI-M and Trinamul Congress supporters ten persons were injured at Baxirkuthi village of Deocharai area under Tufanganj police station this morning. Two houses were also ransacked following the violent incident.

Soon after the incident occurred, a large contingent of police force rushed to the village to control the situation. Police arrested four persons in connection with the incident.

After visiting the place of incident the additional superintendent of police, Cooch Behar, Mr James Kujur said that there was a dispute over two plots of land among some persons who are relatives. Today, at about 7-45 a.m. they entered into a quarrel that resulted into violence. Five persons were injured seriously and two of them – Md Akbar Ali and Md Razzak Ali – were referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital from MJN Hospital, he said. The three others are undergoing treatment at Tufanganj hospital, local sources said.

The ASP, Mr Kujur said that the offenders surrendered to the police after committing the crime. He ruled out any politics in the incident because all the involved persons are relatives.

It was learnt that the offenders left the village on foot with the blood stained weapons and boarded a bus to go to Tufanganj police station. A senior CPI-M leader claimed that the attackers were Trinamul Congress supporters and the victims were CPI-M supporters but it was not a political incident. But, District Trinamul Congress president Mr Rabindra Nath Ghosh alleged that the CPI-M unleashed a reign of terror in Tufanganj and other areas in Cooch Behar district. Today’s violence is also a part of the CPI-M’s plan to terrorise the common people, he added. []
