Workshop held on child health

COOCH BEHAR, Aug. 4: With financial assistance from UNICEF a workshop for media persons on intensive child healthcare was held at the conference hall of Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad today. Cooch Behar district administration, district health department and Zilla Parishad jointly organised the programme in association with state information and cultural affairs department.

CZP sabhadhipati Mr Jnanendra Chandra Chanda inaugurated the workshop. Cooch Behar DM Dr Ravi Inder Singh, CMOH Dr SK Seal, district project officer of ICDS Mr Rataneswar Mandal, information officer (Writers Buildings) Mr Arabindo Kumar Mandal, district information and cultural officer Mr PD Bal, CZP swasthya karmadhyaksha Mr Sasadhar Barman, Deputy CMOH-II Dr Amitava Barman, district maternity and child health officer Dr Sadhan Sen, Mr Tapan Kumar Nandy and others spoke on the occasion.

During his inaugural speech CZP sabhadhipati Mr JC Chanda emphasised on healthcare for the children because they are the future of the society. He said that the media should highlight the measures taken and schemes introduced by the authorities for healthcare of the children. The media has every right to criticise but that should be done with a positive approach, he opined. Mr Chanda made an appeal to the media persons to appreciate the schemes launched for better child healthcare facilities instead of pointing out only the faults in the system.

Cooch Behar DM Dr RI Singh mentioned that media personnel are well informed but they should know more for well coverage on child healthcare facilities available for the mothers and children. Press can help minimise the misconception among the people due to lack of adequate information. Dr Singh requested the media persons to co-operate with the authorities to make the situation better.

Speaking about the workshop Mr AK Mandal said that it is not a parallel scheme of the existing schemes. It is a complementary initiative to better the healthcare schemes introduced for the children.

Cooch Behar CMOH Dr SK Seal emphasised on the need to lower the child mortality rate because it was found that many newborns die within seven days from their birth. He also mentioned that breast-feeding upto six months even without consuming water can keep a child healthy. Media persons will have to convince people with a superstition-free attitude. It will bring good to the society.

Deputy CMOH-II Dr Amitava Barman discussed on the need of consumption of pure drinking water, personal hygiene and sanitation. Practicing cleanliness can control most of the enteric diseases, he opined. District maternity and child health officer Dr Sadhan Sen threw light on child healthcare system with audio-visual show. Case against police stayed at district court

COOCH BEHAR, Aug. 4: Cooch Behar District and Sessions Judge Mr Nripendra Nath Ghosh today stayed the case that was lodged against four police officials in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on 2 August.

The case was lodged by Mrs Kamakshya Barman, widow of Bisadu Barman who was killed in police firing on 20 September of last year during the agitation of The Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association. In that case the CJM Mr Chapal Kumar Panda ordered the inspector-in-charge of Cooch Behar Kotowali police station to submit report on the complaints lodged by the deceased’s wife by 11 September.

Today, the higher court was moved on behalf of the government challenging the legality of the case. Hearing all aspects the judge stayed the case, according to the Public Prosecutor Mr Ganesh Chandra Roy Karmakar.

Mentionworthy, Mrs Kamakshya Barman had lodged the case against four police personnel including IG (North Bengal) Mr KL Meena, the then DIG (Jalpaiguri) Mr BN Ramesh and the earlier SP of Cooch Behar Mr Jagmohan under section 302 and 120 (B) IPC. Her pleader Mr Shibendra Nath Roy said that in the case the widow of Bisadu Barman mentioned that his husband was a cycle-rickshaw puller and he went to Cooch Behar town to pull rickshaw. When he was returning back the police gunned down him at Khagrabari Choupathi. It may be recalled that during GCPA’s movement three police personnel were killed on 20 September. Two other persons were killed in police firing including Bisadu Barman on that day. []
