PHOTO : Boundary railings of Sagar Dighi in Cooch Behar town was being removed to “beautify” the already beautiful pond. Cooch Behar Municipality had constructed the railings and gardens surrounding it a few years ago. The new Rs 37-lakh initiative came under attack from different quarters suspecting misappropriation of government fund. The work came to a halt and that makes the water-body ugly.
Patlakhawa suffering from problems
COOCH BEHAR, July 28: The peasant wing of RSP, Samjukta Kisan Sabha started a movement for development of Patlakhawa Gram Panchayat area. They already prepared a 16-point charter of demands and submitted it to the concerned authorities.
A few days ago the SKS took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the pradhan of Patlakhawa Gram Panchayat. Mr Sarajit Dutta, Mr Tatnarayan Roy and Mr Anil Aich led the programme.
Secretary of Cooch Behar district unit of Samjukta Kisan Sabha, Mr Tatnarayan Roy and secretary of RSP’s Patlakhawa local committee Mr Sarajit Dutta said that the area needs supply of pure drinking water and electricity. As the area is malaria prone it needs special preventive measures to save the people from the dreaded disease. The hospital in Patlakhawa is lying in a poor state and it needs doctors and nurses to serve the suffering people of the area, they said. To save the hospital a boundary wall should be constructed and the dilapidated quarters should be renovated for use of doctors and other health personnel, they opined.
Mr Sarajit Dutta pointed out that the farmers of Patlakhawa should get irrigation facilities and to save their cultivable lands an embankment should be constructed to resist river-erosion of Putimari. Setting up agro-based industrial unit may be helpful for improvement of the socio-economic situation of the area, he opined. Pradhan Montri Gram Sarak Yojana should be implemented in Patlakhawa to develop the existing road communication system, he added.
Not only these, Patlakhawa needs a Higher Secondary school and a Madhyamik school for girls and also a police out-post, added Mr Tatnarayan Roy. The poor villagers should be included in BPL list to get the benefits from the government schemes, he demanded. []
