Emphasis on checking river erosion in UBUP meeting
COOCH BEHAR, July 6: Cooch Behar is a flood and river-erosion prone district and special emphasis was given to check these menaces in the meeting of the Uttar Banga Unnayan Parshad (UBUP) that was held at Cooch Behar yesterday. The UBUP will take initiative to construct embankments on the banks of the rivers that gone through this district. It is expected that the proposed embankments may help to resist river erosion, at least to some extent, to save the agricultural lands.
It was learnt that Tufanganj, Haldibari, Mekhliganj, Sitai and Dinhata were selected as priority areas for anti-erosion work, at the UBUP meeting. The estimated cost for implementation of 12 embankments in these areas is Rs 2.20-crore.
The UBUP meeting was held at Cooch Behar Circuit House yesterday. State Food and supplies minister Mr Paresh Adhikary, Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad sabhadhipati Mr Jnanendra Chandra Chanda, Dinhata MLA Mr Ashok Mandal and district magistrate of Cooch Behar Dr Ravi Inder Singh were present at the meeting. A work-plan was chalked out at the meeting to spend Rs 6.74-crore that was allotted recently for this district.
Two long awaited bridges are going to come up with financial assistance from the UBUP. Surveys will be conducted for construction of a bridge on Tista to connect Mekhliganj with Haldibari in Mekhliganj sub-division and another bridge on Kaljani between Balarampur and Deocharai in Tufanganj sub-division. Rs 7-lakh and Rs 5-lakh were allocated for the survey work. Survey already started for construction of a much-demanded bridge at Adabarighat in Dinhata sub-division to connect Dinhata with Sitai.
In the UBUP meeting, Rs 86-lakh was allocated for improvement of infrastructure of different health centres of the district. JD Hospital of Mahishbathan will get Rs 20-lakh and Cooch Behar Regional Cancer Centre will get Rs 10-lakh for upgradation of infrastructures.
Education sector will also going to be developed with UBUP assistance. Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari, will get Rs 50-lakh for its development. Funds were also allotted for infrastructure development to Maharani Indira Devi Girls’ High School (Rs 10-lakh), Cooch Behar Sadar Government High School (Rs 10-lakh), Cooch Behar College (Rs 3-lakh), Dinhata College (Rs 12-lakh), Jenkins School (Rs 4-lakh) and Government Blind School (Rs 15-lakh).
In the UBUP meeting funds were allotted for development of Ghughumari Bazar (Rs 10-lakh), Ranirhat Bazar (Rs 15-lakh) and the municipal market of Dinhata Municipality (Rs 10-lakh). Mathabhanga Municipality and Cooch Behar Municipality will get Rs 10-lakh each for improving the sewerage systems. Rs 25-lakh will be spent to build up a tourist lodge at Changrabandha in Mekhliganj sub-division.
Rs 49-lakh were allocated at the UBUP meeting for construction of some small bridges in this district. Rs 2.5-lakh will be spent for sinking of Mark-II tube-wells for providing small irrigation facilities to the farmers of rural areas. []

State’s first billing enquiry IVRS launched
COOCH BEHAR, July 6: Telecom District Manager, BSNL, Cooch Behar, Mr MK Seth inaugurated Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) in billing enquiry and bill reminder system at Mathabhanga yesterday. This type of advanced computerised system has been first commissioned in entire West Bengal Telecom Circle along with its advanced speech qualities.
By dialling 1660, a telephone subscriber can get details of the current bill of the telephone number from the computer at any time around the clock for 365 days. Such type of advanced computerised service was installed for the first time in the state, BSNL sources claimed.
The TDM, Mr Seth said that there are some additional facilities in the newly introduced system. By dialling 1952 with the old number one can get the new number of a telephone that was changed.
Speaking on the occasion Mr Seth appreciated the all out efforts of the Sub-divisional Officer (Telecom), Mr Dilip Kumar Barman and his team for their dedicated work for implementing such advanced facilities for the convenience of the customers of Mathabhanga zone. These facilities has been launched on experimental basis and its service will be strengthened in next three weeks by collecting data from customers as well as from other wings, the TDM added.
From now on the customers can be able to get billing information and change number announcement on line by dialling 1660 and 1952 in Mathabhanga sub-division.
Mr Seth has intimated about the telecom master plan for Mathabhanga town. He has assured that Mathabhanga will get all types of advance facilities in near future. []
