Philadelphia, PA, September 10, 2007: The National Alliance of Women Veterans is a Philadelphia-based organization which acts as an advocacy and referral organization for military women. This organization began in an effort to address the needs of women who have been sexually assaulted in the military. We have been extremely successful in promoting the culture of the military as it relates to transitioning women who are abused back into civilian life. Our “Women Veteran’s Day Tribute” of 2006 was instrumental in allowing individuals who were sexually assaulted to share their stories and for providing support and encouragement to other women who have been withdrawn and in some cases left feeling alienated by the beauracracy and the tedious process that exist as a result of these experiences through our present system.
We believed that Philadelphia is beginning to realize the importance of supporting our organization in making a significant impact in what is one of our nations most quieted but extremely complex and life-changing dilemma any woman can experience. We continue to reach out to other women groups with the hopes of providing hope and healing to hurting women in Philadelphia and our country.
We are grateful for the support that we have received to date from the WURD 900am Radio Family, in particular to Eleanor Dezzi who has allowed Cathy Santos, Founder of the NAWV to share information and provide much-needed support and resources to listeners of this great program on veteran’s issues in Philadelphia and the country. Also, to our elected officials, State Representative Jewel Williams, State Senator Shirley Kitchen, City Councilwoman Anna Verna, Donna Reed-Miller and Darrell Clarke and others who were sensitive to our cry and provided citations to deserving individuals that were presented to extraordinary women veterans demonstrating their outstanding sacrifices and commitment for their patriotism. We also are especially grateful to Channel 6 News Reporter Erin O’Hearn and Neighborhood Leader’s staff writer, Arlene Edmunds - for coverage on this event and the National Alliance of Women Veterans organization, The Philadelphia Tribune, Comcast Cable TVs Dr. Faye Wilson and special thanks to Bishop Ernest C. Morris, Pastor of Mount Airy Church of God In Christ.
We are pleased to announce our 2nd Annual “Pre-Veteran’s Day Tribute to be held on November 3rd, 2007 beginning at 5:00 p.m. to be held at Mount Airy Church of God in Christ with participants who have a sincere desire to support and address the veteran’s need for healing in the “Gospel Concert Benefit Extravaganza”, which will be the kick off for a week of Veteran’s Day activities and events at various locations and venues. There will be a VIP Reception, invitation only with Mayoral Candidate Michael Nutter and other dignitaries.
