| LECTURE I PSYCHIATRIC NURSING - An interpersonal process whereby the professional nurse practitioners assist individual, family or community to promote mental health, to prevent or cope with the experience of mental illness and suffering and, if necessary, to find meaning in the experience; - Strives to promote and maintain behavior which contributes to integrated functioning. FUNCTIONS AND ROLE OF THE PSYCHIATRIC NURSING > To assess patients emotional needs. > To respond to patient's crisis. > To intervene to reduce panic disturbances. > To make sure patient's rights are safeguarded. > To assess the effects of medication therapies on patients. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND > If medical surgical nursing is the heartof the nursing profession, "psychiatric is the soul." > Mental illness has been viewed as: - Possessions by demons - Punishment for religious/social transgression - Weakness of will or spirit - Violations of societal norms > The modern era of psychiatric care can be traced in England and France in the 18th century (Period of Enlightenment). > Rosenblatt - Assistance - Least restrictive - Provided food and money to enable the family |
