The man who is going to carry out the work on our roof came out with the best understatement I've heard for a while. Now that the ceiling is down in the back bedroom (where Bec can be seen staring forlornly up between the joists) the extent of the damp penetration can clearly be seen. The walls at the back of the house are very nearly running with water. Geoff the roofer merely said 'I expect you'll find it's been leaking for some time now', with the measured tone of someone who's seen it all dozens of times before. Perhaps it just looks worse with all the rain we've had recently.

Still, the rain held off completely on Saturday , so Andrew and I were able to complete the sub-base and the formwork for the concrete pad at the back of the garden. The formwork looks very professional, I'm quite pleased with it. It has a cross-fall and everything. The book told us how to do it. Fantastic book by the way.

The shed itself is being delivered tommorrow, all 12' x 6' of it. I hope it fits through the house. Everything we are having delivered has to fit round a narrow dog-leg at the bottom of the stairs (too narrow for a wheelbarrow). That includes 2100kg of cement, sand and aggregate that is also being delivered tommorrow. Just so you know, aggregate is not called aggregate in the Westcountry, it is known as 'stone to dust'. Hardcore or sub-base material is called 'scalpings'. Which is the same as ballast, I think? Builder's merchants are bewildering places for the uninitiated.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now, got to be up early tommorrow to manage those deliveries. And then I get to play with a 12" vibrating plate I've hired. Oh, don't get me started on tool hire. I had to run this one past my physics teacher. The brochure claims this for its outdoor heater... 'Using infra-red heat, energy is only released when it encounters a solid mass' Well I'll be...
