The recordbreaker

So I spent the weekend breaking a world record.

Now you might be jumping to the conclusion that I'm some kind of wildly adventurous adrenalin-junkie forging new links in the chain of history left and right.  That I know my Guinness inside out, and I'm some kind of finely honed record-breaking machine.  Don't.  These would be incorrect conclusions.  This weekend E and I were part of a group of intrepid souls who tied the World's Longest Square Knot.

The details can be found at http://scoutknot.com/.  But the long and short of it (hah!) is that close to 1000 people tied approximately 8000 square knots in under 5 minutes.  I'll give you a minute to catch your breath, maybe find your inhalers.  Actually, this did involve a minute quantity of stress for me when I was informed that there were much fewer participants than expected and I'd be responsible for tying MORE THAN ONE square knot in under 5 minutes.  I took a  moment and composed myself, lest I fall apart in front of hundreds of boy scouts.  Thus steeled, I pounced upon a discarded length of twine and set to practicing my square knots.

And I must say I was probably a little prouder of my effort than I should have been.  E, this cool boy scout dad that we met standing on line waiting to tie knots, and I made up the anchor for our repective line, and I more than pulled my own weight.  No granny knots here.  And believe me, they did check.  There really is nothing quite like having an 11 year old in a boy scout uniform browbeating you bc your ENDS ARE NOT TIGHT ENOUGH.  Yeesh.  Enjoy THAT powertrip while it lasts, my young friend.  Anywho, my ends WERE tight and the anchor team (bringing up the rear!) held it down.  Wooo, line 21!
