| Have you ever wondered what your style of learning is? HBDI and VARK are two questionnaires that are made to help people discover their best learning style and how you can adjust to other strategies of learning. The HBDI questionnaire focuses on feeling, doing, innovating and thinking learners. VARK focuses on visual, kinesthetic, Aural and read/write learning styles. Both are helpful to student in college. HBDI and VARK provide information that you can relate too. By doing each questionnaire you can learn how to adapt to different styles of learning. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the results of the HBDI inventory, I lean the most strongly toward the feeling model of learning. In the thinking range I scored fairly low. Innovating and doing are also effective ways that I learn. Naturally I enjoy a personal connection and emotional support, as a feeling learner. As a thinking learner I practice what I learn. Thinkers benefit from time to reflect on what they are learning and pondering facts and theories. For example, reading the text book in class. On the other hand, I seek new possibilities on the innovative model of learning by writing something new that I haven't write about in the past. In writing class I wrote an essay about me coming to America. I never thought I was going to write a paper about that subject, But I did it! I enjoy independent projects. In my study skills class after every chapter there is a journal that we have to do. Also in my study skills the instructor showed us how to take notes in a Cornell style. IN study skills class the instructor showed us how to make a web page on the computer step-by-step. Usually, when I'm doing something new I need someone to guide me. An experience that I had this semester was when I had to write the HBDI paragraph. I didn't know how to start it but then I saw an example that the instructor put up on the board and finally I was able to do it. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| After taking the VARK questionnaire, I mostly use the reading, writing and kinesthetic styles of learning. Visual and aural have a low score but are also ways that I learn. In every class I'm taking this semester I always take notes and read them when I get home. If for any reason I don't understand, I use my Merriam- Webster dictionary or get on the internet and find easier information on the same subject. I can also, make good use of the handouts which help me a lot. I highlight the main ideas and details. For instance, we had an assignment in my writing class, in which I had to write a research paper. I highlighted everything that I was going to use on the paper. Then I wrote it in my own words. As a kinesthetic learner I relate information to my own experiences. In my study skills class we did a puzzle. The way I do the puzzle is the same way I do my life." When talking about visualization I learn from lectures which are supplemental with graphs, charts and photos. I use outlines, sq3r note taking and vocabulary words that I learn in my reading class. In the aural learning mode, I prefer to have the information explained to me. In my writing class, when I turn in an essay after the professor is finished reading he gives back my paper we go over it. He explains what he wants and doesn't want. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the VARK learning styles my writing professor has a multimodal teaching style. He is a very energetic professor and always gives me feedback on everything we do in class. He is always trying to help us to enhance our paper. He has this saying, "A paper is never done." He gives us handouts and explains with stories and jokes. If we don't understand we can stay after class and he will go over anything. Also when it's time to turn in an essay, he always picks between 1 and 3 and puts it into the computer so we can correct our mistakes as a group. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the VARK, I believe my study skills professor has a multi modal teaching style. As a visual teacher in his class, he gave everyone 3 copies of a certificate one of them we put on the classroom wall so every day we walk in class it reminds us what we are. I thought that was a good idea. Also as an aural teacher he explained to us how to use sq3r notes to our advantage. We can use that strategy in every class. For read/write we write the text book journals and we get feedback from the instructor. In addition, as a kinesthetic/tactile teacher in class we played a game called graduation. One person had to toss the ball to the bucket from 3 feet back, 6 feet back, 9 feet back. The purpose of the game was to show how easier it was to break stuff down. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| My least preferred style of learning would be read/write method on the VARK profile. All of my professors use this method. In order to adapt I need to attend every day class to hear what they go over. I need to seat close to the professor, so I don;t get distracted. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| The VARK and the HBDI helped me determine what kind of learner I am, what kind of teachers my professors are, and how can I learn from them. Through this process, I learn that instructors teach the same way they learn. This semester all of my professors have multi modal styles of teaching. I know I can accomplish more because of what I have learned thanks to the HBDI and VARK questionnaires. | |||||||||||||||||||||
