Yes-vote wins

The result for the votation in the referendum had been released and majority of the students cast in a Yes vote in the referendum.

73% of the total turnout of voters voted yes, while 26% voted no.

For 6 days, the representation of the student body in the Board of Regents(BOR) rested on the hands of the students in the votation for referendum.

The question for the referendum is as follows:

Do you approve of the existing Codified Rules for Student Regent Selection (CRSRS) as rules and qualifications to govern the selection of our student representative to the UP Board of Regents?

Yes vote meant upholding the Codified Rules for Student Regent Selection (CRSRS). This entails the continued participation of the the Katipunan ng mg Sangguniang Mag-aaral sa UP (KASAMA sa UP),a group of student councils, in choosing the Student Regent.

No-voters aimed for the the following changes: a grade requirement for a candidate student regent, the removal of the KASAMA sa UP in the Office of the Student regent for a more neutral process of selection, and a more democratized selection by having one candidate per recognized student council.

According to supporters of the NO-vote like party list Alyansa , voting NO does not mean abolishment of the student regent.

In April 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the new UP Charter(Republic Act 9500), stating that the selection of a student regent must be governed by rules that have been approved by students through a referendum.

The student regent is the single student representative in the BOR, the highest policy-making body in the University of the Philippines.
