Chapter 6
The dark circles under her eyes the next morning were evident as she walked into the building. Ducking her head as she entered, she struggled not to cry at the pitiful looks some of her colleagues were giving her. She knew she looked terrible. Nothing could be done this morning to help her condition. Ever since Kyle had left so angry the night before she'd been unable to sleep, and haunted by disturbing dreams when she did finally dozed off. She managed to make it all the way to the room without even lifting her head.
When she was finally in its safe solitude, though, she sighed, and raised her head up for the first time since she'd arrived. She was greeted by his eyes, Max's, staring at her intently. She mustered a small smile for him, to signal to him that she was still on his side, before she dropped into a chair and just stared at the floor. For the millionth time, she thought again of the night before. Maybe Kyle was right...well, she knew he was right. She'd changed since she'd taken this job. But it wasn't like he was spouse of the month either. He was just like his father and grandfather, hardly ever home. Even though, he still loved her. And he still let her know so. He made an effort, which she realized she herself hadn't been doing.
"What's wrong?"
Her head darted up quickly, immediately locking onto Max's face. She paused a moment, gathering her thoughts, excited by his speaking but touched at the same time.
"I...I got in a fight with my husband last night."
She had no idea what abilities he had, so she decided that honesty would be the best tactic. And not just that....she kind of felt like she could trust him. It was truly bizarre. She noticed then the look on his face..almost like disappointment.
"I'm sorry."
She smiled at him sincerely, feeling already a little better.
"Thanks."
Another silence passed between them, and she was beginning to wonder if he had decided to go silent again.
"Max?"
He merely nodded his head, which she took as meaning he was ready to talk again.
"Where are you from?"
She knew it was out of nowhere, and there was a chance that he might not answer her, but she felt like she had to ask. When he did not answer for awhile she felt discouraged, and almost gave up.
"Truthfully, I don't know."
The butterflies began their dancing in her stomach once again.
"Where did you live...before now?"
"With my parents...well, my adoptive parents."
"Oh."
She racked her mind, sorted through the thousands of questions that screamed out at her, each one crucial.
But somehow, none of those seemed to be the ones that she wanted to ask.
"I'm sorry you have to be here, Max. I can only imagine how terrible it must be for you, to be locked up in a cage, instead of in your own home."
She wached as he looked away for a moment, and then back at her. His eyes were sad.
"I would love to be home. But I don't know where home is. So I guess I take what I can get."
She felt the tears wetting her cheeks again, and she struggled to hide them from him.
"Please don't cry."
His tender voice only made her sob harder. This wonderful creature, this being, that was locked up at her mercy...actually cared how she felt.
"Max...why do you trust me? When you know that I could do..anything I wanted to you."
She felt a wave of comfort wash over her, and her tears subsided.
"Because I know you wouldn't."
Wiping her tears, she met his eyes again. He was smiling.
"How?"
"I can feel it. Your heart. I know that all you want is answers...not an autopsy video."
She smiled because he was, and it made her feel better.
"You're right. I don't know how you know, but you do. I've never known anyone more caring than you, Max. And I can't help but think that you're no more alien than the rest of us."
He laughed.
"If only that were true."
