Isabel Evans sat beneath a tree, trying to finish her homework. She usually didn't get time at home to do it..............not that she was home all that often. Lately, she was trying to stay out more and more..........to avoid Max. It was getting harder and harder to hide her feelings. She hated the fact that she was stuck here on Earth, and even more hateful was the fact that Max and her both had been adopted by the Evanses. She loved her parents and all, but Isabel had been in love with Max ever since the first moment she had seen him in that cave 10 years ago. He wasn't her 'brother' then. No, it wasn't until the Evanses had adopted them both that her love had become forbidden. She looked across the field to where Max was talking to Liz Parker. She frowned, looking at them. She wanted to hate Liz. But try as she might, she couldn't feel jealous of or hate Liz. Isabel had only to look in the mirror to not hate Liz. Isabel knew that she was exceptionally beautiful. She could only feel sorry for Liz who needed any attention that she could get.
"What's up, Izzy?" Michael came and sat beside her.
Isabel sighed. She might not hate Liz Parker, but Michael was a totally different story. If it wasn't for him, she might have been with Max today. "The Sky," Isabel said, annoyed.
Michael frowned but didn't go away. Isabel looked over to Max and Liz again. Max was smiling at something she was saying. He was holding her hand too. Nah, Isabel thought, she hated Liz after all.
"What's wrong?" Michael asked.
Isabel gathered her books and stood up. "Nothing, Go away." She said as she left.
The more Isabel looked in the mirror, the more she was reminded of the fact that Max and her weren't biologically related. Calling them siblings was stretching the laws of genetics. Why, Max looked more like Liz Parker than he did like her! No, they were definitely not related. She smiled at her reflection. She loved Max and all, but he was not nearly as stunning as herself. No, they were not related.
As Isabel lay down to sleep, all the thoughts that she had been avoiding came rushing back to her. Max and her being together was not possible on EARTH. SHE cursed the damned pilot who had been stupid enough to crash their space ship. When they had been younger, Isabel had always gone to Max with her problems. But as they grew older, their roles had become more defined; they had grown apart. Isabel tried to stop thinking about Max. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.

Max paced his room. He was worried about Isabel. She had been avoiding him for some time now. And when he had confronted her with the knowledge, she had acted like she didn't know what he was talking about. He had tried to get Michael to talk to her, thinking the she would tell Michael. Isabel adored Michael. Max sat down on his bed, coming to a decision. He was going to take a walk..........in Isabel's dreamland. He took the picture of Isabel from his bedside table and lied down on his bed................

Isabel was arranging her make-up drawers. Max had been right; something was bothering her. She only did that when she was upset. And for her to be dreaming about it.......... Just then, Isabel turned and looked around the room. She stood up and Max saw that she was wearing a really short, black leather dress that didn't bother to leave anything to the imagination. Max got in the corner.
"Max?" Isabel said, coming towards the corner where Max was hiding.
Max didn't want Isabel to think that he was invading her privacy, so he moved further back.
"I know you are there, Max. Come out!" Isabel said.
Max reluctantly came out and Isabel smiled brightly seeing him. Then he realized that she thought that he was a part of her dream. She walked up to him and Max couldn't help staring at her. She smiled seeing his expression, then she frowned. "This is a dream, right?" she asked, tilting her head to a side.
Max nodded, relieved.
Isabel nodded to herself. "This must be. Because you never look at me otherwise."
Max laughed nervously. "Look at you? What are you talking about, Iz?"
"I am talking about you hardly ever noticing me...You barely know that I am alive..........and I...I love you." Isabel finished.
Max suddenly felt all defensive. "That is not true! I do love you." he said, trying to soothe her.
Isabel smiled ironically. "Yes, just not the way I want you to. Let me rephrase myself.........I am IN LOVE with you, Max. I have been ever since I first saw you."
"But you are my..........." Max started.
"Don't say it." Isabel said, putting her hand on his chest. "You don't believe that anymore than I do. You know better."
"You are right, Izzy. We all did come out of different pods and I've always thought of you as a friend and........."
"Shut up, Max." Isabel said, cutting him off. Then she kissed him.
Max kissed back before he could stop himself. He, then, snapped himself out of her dream.
Isabel woke up smiling. Big surprise: she had been dreaming about Max. She wished that she was gutsy enough to tell Max in reality what she did in her dreams. It had been a strange dream. Not that all her dreams didn't revolve around her getting with Max, but this one had felt more real. Isabel sighed. She had to stop dreaming about Max. It was a lost cause. But what if they were meant to be? Isabel had felt that way in the beginning. She had always had a bond with Max, but he was so completely blind to her. Isabel looked at the time. 5:30 am. She tried going back to sleep. She liked her dream world way better than the real one.

"WHOA!" was all that Max could think. He hadn't realized that Isabel felt this way about him........or that she was a great kisser. He liked Liz and she was good and all, but Isabel was..........."WHOA!" Max thought again. Surprisingly, Max wasn't disgusted. He knew they weren't biologically related; He had always thought of Isabel as a friend.........a soulmate even.......they had a certain bond between them. Heck, he even had a crush on her way back when. But it had seemed hopeless and then he had met Liz Parker. Max had to admit that he was flattered. Isabel thought that she was in love with him. Isabel was beautiful and popular and smart and a great kiss............... Max stopped himself, but yes, he was definitely flattered.
Max made a point of paying more attention to Isabel from now and on.......not that it would be a problem after that dream. He felt bad for 'ignoring' her all those years. Him and Michael had always had each other to talk to, but Isabel was the only female alien; there were things she couldn't tell them. It must be really hard for her. Max looked at the time. 6:00 am. He decided to get out of bed and fix some breakfast.

Isabel was getting ready for school when she heard a knock on her door.
"Come in!" she said, picking up a hair brush.
"Good Morning, Isabel." Max said, coming in.
Isabel stopped in the process of brushing her hair and turned to look at him. "Hey, Max." she said, dreamily, remembering her dream.
"B-Breakfast is ready." Max said a little nervously.
Isabel frowned. "I'll be down as soon as I finish getting ready." she said, turning back to the mirror.
"Just come. You already look beautiful." Max said, leaving her room.
Isabel turned to the door, her mouth open. Max had never said that before. Sure, he told her she looked good or nice often enough, but beautiful? Isabel decided that she looked perfect, and went downstairs, leaving her hair as it was.

"What are you looking at?" Liz asked for the 3rd time.
"Nothing," Max said, turning to her.
Liz frowned. This was too weird. Max was looking across the filed to where Michael and Isabel were eating lunch.
"I am going to go now," Liz said.
"Yea, I'll see you tonight." Max said and walked over to where Isabel was.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Isabel got home really late that night. She had gone out to the desert to think. Isabel didn't know what had changed, but Max had seemed to be looking at her all day. Isabel didn't like that way he had been looking at her; she loved it! She was pretty sure that she had seen Max staring at her mouth during lunch. She really wished that Michael hadn't been there. She was beginning to wish that more and more lately. Max had gone out with Liz tonight, and he still seemed to like her. But at least he was starting to think of Isabel as something other than his adoptive sister. Isabel was sure that he was; one didn't look at his sister that way Max had looked at her during lunch. He was actually seeing her as a member of the opposite sex. It wasn't much, but it was a beginning.
That night, Max came to say goodnight to her, like he usually did. They sat and talked about things.........things other than their mutual alien heritage. And later, when Max left, he kissed her lightly on the lips. It was an innocent kiss, but not a brotherly one. There was hope for them yet, and yes, this was a definite beginning.
The End
