Summary: AU Fic Michael adopted by a rich family and is very popular at
Roswell high. Football jock. Max and Isabel are almost the same but Max is
a jock football player too and Isabel is a party chick who is dating bad boy
Alex Whitman who is a party guy too. Maria was adopted too by a rich family.
Liz is the same. Maria and Liz are best friends and they are popular and
they talk to Michael, Max and Isabel but not on a regular basis.

Francisco was released the next day. There wasn't much damage to his head
and his vital signs were good. Maria was in the living room with her father
talking, trying to get things to be normal, when the phone rang. She got up
to answer it in the other room and it was Michael."Hey baby" he said lovingly.
"Hey Michael," she said sounding uneasy.
"What's wrong " he asked knowing her as well as he did she sounded weird.
Maria had been thinking a lot the past few day and she'd come to the
conclusion that she should devote her time to her father and to getting back
the years they'd lost.
"Michael there's really no easy way to say this" *Oh what am I doing? Am I
sure? Yes* "I think that we should stop seeing each other for a while"
*I've never cared about anyone like I do Michael, but my father comes first*
"What?" Michael was in shock. *I thought she was happy. I've never been
serious with anyone but Maria. This isn't happening*
"I need time," she paused *be strong, don't cry* "Me and my dad need to
rebuild our relationship"
"This is ridiculous Maria you're just gonna throw us away" he shouted into
the phone, he'd never shouted at her of all the years he'd known her, but
he'd never in his life been this hurt.
"There's nothing else to talk about Michael it's over," and she hung up. That
wasn't how she wanted things to go but what could she expect really.

Michael couldn't believe what had happened. He didn't know how to act, he'd
never been in the situation where he got dumped before. He went to school
that Monday hoping Maria had come around but when he saw her in the parking
lot he knew she saw him but she kept on walking.

"Maria, what is going on?" Liz demanded noticing that Maria and Michael
hadn't been together all day.
"Me and Michael broke up"
Liz immediately assumed it was Michael that did the breaking."That asshole and right after your father's accident-"
"No Liz" she interrupted "I ended it"
Liz was in shock, she couldn't understand why Maria would do that. "What, why?"
"I need to spend more time with my father, I don't have time for a boyfriend"
"Maria, you liked Michael a lot last I heard how could you just end it with him like that?"
"My father is important to me, I thought you of all people would understand" Maria didn't like that no one saw it the way she did.
"Maria, I do understand " Liz was getting angry at this point. "You are my best friend, I know you've waited for your father to come around and while you were waiting you put your life on hold, and just when you finally began to enjoy yourself, you throw everything away again. I know that you care very deeply for Michael and it hurts you to be away. I can see it in your eyes that you aren't happy. You can have them both."
Maria didn't want to hear this. She hated not having her father for all those years, but she also hated not having Michael. Her thoughts were arguing with one another. She looked away form Liz and saw Michael, staring at her. She didn't know what to do. "I can't deal with this now Liz," and she got up and walked away.

As she was walking down the hall she ran into Michael, literally.
"Maria can we talk?" he said pleading with his eyes.
"Um no. I have to go. I'm in a hurry." As she started to walk away he called after her.
"Why are you doing this?" he said demanding an answer.
"I told you," she said with her back to him.
"Can't you look at me?" he said, knowing she was only confused.
She turned to face him and tears began to form. *I have to leave before I cry*
"I really have to go Michael," she turned and left ignoring him when he
called her name.
