Max was waiting for her when she finally got away from Liz, saying she
had to use the ladies room.
"So what's up?" She asked, squinting to see him in through the shadows.
"No one has gym this period," he grinned at her, and she smiled back.
They walked out together, thankful the hall was empty, and went to the gym.
"What about music?" Maria asked on the way.
"I didn't think that far ahead," he said sheepishly, as they walked into
the gym.
"I may be able to help," Mrs. Mackenzie stood waiting for them, having
heard their conversation in the hall.
Max and Maria stared at her, startled. They hadn't thought the gym
teacher would be in there.
"Don't worry, I won't mention the fact that you're skipping, as long as
you do me a favor..." Mrs. Mackenzie smiled.
"That's blackmail!" Maria said, shocked.
"Well, I'm desperate!" The teacher replied, just as dramatically. "Now,
come into my office, I'll explain."
They followed her slowly, looking like they were on there way to their
own executions.
