Why Teach Mythology?

There are two basic reasons for studying mythology in my class.  The first reason is that chronologically this is the most logical point in which to start.  Mythology shows how people tried to make sense of the world they lived in or tried to explain the, otherwise, unexplainable.  The second reason for studying mythology is to see its influences on the world/society we live in today.  Basically, everywhere we look, we see some type of mythological influence.  Mythology shows us how far we have come . . . or have we really come that far?
