What to Bring

A visit to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or the Quetico Provincial Park can require a variety of clothing and basic items. With the diverse variety of materials and clothing options available today, the possibilities are endless. Here's a few suggestions on basic necessities that will enhance any wilderness adventure.

BASIC NEEDS

First Aid Kit:
Fill with bandages of varying size, first aid creme, ace bandage, ibuprophen or asprin, and first aid tape.

Flash light:
Figure on one flashlight per tent.

Travel games:
Bring along a deck of cards and/or traveling games in case bad weather prevails.

Fishing gear or photography gear:
Depending on the individual group members interests, don't forget the fun stuff! Remember what is brought along gets carried, so pay attention to weight.

Toiletry items:
Bring one bottle of shampoo, one can of shaving creme, etc. on the trip. Most items can be shared by the group to avoid excess weight.

Sunscreen and bug repellant:
Plan on one bottle of each per canoe.

Paper and pencil:
Journal the trip, keep track of games scores and mark out maps with route options.

BASIC CLOTHING

Here's some clothing suggestions for trips starting after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. Two sets of clothes from the inside out (one to wear/one as spare): socks, underclothing, pants and shirt. Also plan to bring a long sleeved shirt, light-weight jacket, shorts, hiking or tennis shoes (for around the camp site), and knee high rubber boots for canoeing and portaging.

ADDITIONAL SPRING AND FALL CLOTHING

Add in an extra set of clothing from the skin out (it'll be a total of three sets taken). Include a set of long johns, a hat, gloves, vest and exchange the light-weight jacket for a medium weight jacket. Polar fleece and wool items will continue to insulate even if they are wet. Avoid cotton and cotton blends for spring and fall trips whenever possible.
