Ellipse or circle Isolated Point
Hyperbola 2 Intersecting lines
Parabola 2 Parallel lines or 1 line

 

REMEMBER:

ELLIPSE= Both numbers positive, different number in front, 2 squared terms.

CIRCLE= Same numbers squared, both positive.

HYPERBOLA= 1 negative number, 2 squared numbers.

PARABOLA= 1 squared number

 

EXAMPLE PROBLEMS:

*X2 + 2Y2 + 16Y + 32 = 0   (ELLIPSE)

* 9Y2 = 25X2 + 400X + 1825    (HYPERBOLA)

* X2 +Y 2= 10X + 2Y +23  (CIRCLE)

*(X+3)2 = 8(Y+2)   (PARABOLA)
