4.1 Introduction to Matrices

Matrix- a rectangular array of variable or constants in horizontal rows and vertical columns, usually enclosed in brackets.

Element- each value in the matrix

Example

[4x]            = [y]

[4x+8y]    =  [72]

Step 1: 4x + 8y=72

            Step 2: 4x + 8(4x)=72 :You have to replace the y with 4x

           Step 3: 4x + 32x = 72  : then you simplify the equation

           Step 4: 36x=72  :Combine the like terms and divide each side by 36

       Answer:      x = 2
