Chapter 10.6 Transformations of Conics

    Little Susie was playing in her backyard with her little brother throwing a football. She got mad at her little brother because he could not catch the ball.  She eventually got so angry she threw it so hard her little brother did not have time to react. Once he gained consciousness little Susie realized her little brother had an imprint of an ellipse on his face. She then took her little brothers face and plotted him on a graph with the center being at the origin. She then wanted to translate the ellipse so that she could see it because her brothers face was stuck to the graph paper. She figured if she used the translation matrix and T(-8, 3) then she would be able to see the ellipse. Find the vertices of the translated ellipse.

Little Susie's work:

First create a matrix with the vertices and the vertices are (-5, 0) (5,0) (0,3) (0, -3). And then add the translation matrix for T(-8, 3).

The vertices of the translated ellipse are at (-13, 3) (-3, 3) (-8, 6) (-8, 0). Little Susie could finally see the ellipse and she was fascinated by it. And her little brother imprint finally went away and he was o.k.
