Chapter 2 section 3
Slope
By: Jason B.
Roger is racing in the quarter mile this weekend at Rockingham. He is trying to figure out how quick he can run the quarter mile in. He knows that he runs the 1/16 in two seconds and the 1/8 in six seconds . At this rate what should his time be in the quarter mile? Make a graph to show his time and find the slope.
Steps -Make a graph
-Draw the line
-Determine the slope. -Use the Y axis as seconds and the X axiis as distance. If his first time is 2 seconds at the 1/16 and his second time is 6 seconds at the 1/8, you have to move up 4 spaces and over 1. This gives you your slope of 4/1 . To find what his time was in the quarter mile you have to move up 4 spaces and over 1 space. If you do it correctly you will end up at 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile . This is the answer to his question.
distance 1/16 1/8 1/4
Answer-10 seconds slope= 4/1
