Lesson 4-6                                          Erik C.

A Simple Example of a  Two–Variable Matrix Equation:

Write a matrix equation for the system of equations.

–4x + 6y = 10

-4x – 9y = –20

You must first determine the coefficient, variable, and constant matrices.

–4x + 6y  | = 10  From left to right coefficient, variable, constant matrix

-4x      | 9y   | = –20

Write the matrix equation.

A . X = B

Equation:

–4x + [6y] = [10]

-4x +  [-9y] = [–20]

                    This equation can be solved by elimination

Solving for y: 15y=30

                        y = 2

You can plug this number back in to solve for x.

-4x + 12 = 10

-4x = 22

                       x = 5.5

Your final answers are: (5.5,2)
