Chapter 2 Functions And Models Section 1-4
Becky D. Discrete Math
The word problem will ask questions on concepts explained in Chapter 2 Sections 1-4.
If a person if given the table with the number of students who earned a certain grade on a test decide which values are the x values and which are the y values. Then use the points and make a graph. Find the line of best fit, and decide whether the graph is a function. Using the grades in the graph use the floor function to find the new grades to the nearest tens place.
| Number of Students |
4 |
8 |
2 |
4 |
7 |
5 |
| Grade Earned |
82 |
90 |
100 |
60 |
74 |
80 |
1. The x values are the number of students. This is known since the x values are always in the first row. 2. The y values are the grade earned. This is known since the y values are always in the second row.

3. The line of best fit will be ascending and it the points (2, 100), (4, 82), and (5, 80) will all be above the line of best fit. The points (4, 60 ), (7, 74), and (8, 90) will all be below the line of best fit.
4. The graph is not a function since it does not pass the vertical line test since two of the x values are the same.
5. I82I = 80 I90I = 90 I100I = 100 I60I = 60 I74I = 70 I80I = 80
